Lynch a game-time call, and Hawks tracking data on Chancellor

Seahawks bandagesWhen Kam Chancellor first started telling people he was coming back to the Seahawks on Wednesday, one of the things he said was, “Me and Marshawn started a mission two years ago. I can’t let my dog down.”

It was interesting — and many would say appropriate — that the defense’s heartbeat was recognizing the offense’s thumper as a kindred leader of the team. But, as Chancellor potentially makes his return Sunday vs. Chicago, Lynch might not be with him.

The running back is questionable with a calf injury suffered in Green Bay.

“Yeah, he’s got a calf that we’re working on,” Pete Carroll said. “We’ve been able to condition him some, but we just want to make sure and take care of him during the week, and so he’ll run tomorrow and we’ll see if he’s OK, and it will go all the way to game day on this one though.”

If Lynch can’t play, Fred Jackson would make the start and Thomas Rawls would back him up.

As for Chancellor, the team seems to be planning on him playing.

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Packers

Controversy king Mike Freeman is at it again, claiming Jimmy Graham is ready to “explode” if he doesn’t get the ball. Freeman is the same dude who put out the inflammatory report last year claiming there was a schism in the locker room over Russell Wilson, who wasn’t black enough for some teammates. Pay no mind to his anti-Seahawk ramblings.

On a more constructive note, Bob Condotta reviewed every pass play that might have been able to go to Graham and determined what we all knew: He could have been more involved.

Field Gulls gave a much longer breakdown (with screenshots) of Graham’s Green Bay game.

At 0-2, the Seahawks look a lot like last year’s Super Bowl team.

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Packers

Once again, fans want to lynch Darrell Bevell. Especially Mama Lynch.

Richard Sherman talked about his positions as a spokesman for societal change and as the Hawks’ new nickel corner.

Dave Boling says the Packers are pretending this is not a big game of redemption.

Contrary to reports that the Hawks have offered concessions to Kam Chancellor, Pete Carroll said the team has not been negotiating, and the team apparently wants him to report before it considers making any chances to his deal.

Report: Allen ends negotiations with Chancellor

Paul allen trophyIt looks like the Seahawks are finished trying to appease Kam Chancellor.

Seahawks owner Paul Allen has told John Schneider and his staff to cease negotiations with the holdout safety, ESPN’s Ed Werder reported on Friday. (H/T to 247Sports via Davis Hsu and Evan Hill on Twitter)

Chancellor told NFL Network’s Dan Hellie on Wednesday that the sides were $900,000 apart and that the Seahawks had offered to move about $3 million from his $6.8 million salary in 2017 to add to his $5.1 million salary in 2016. Chancellor told Hellie the Hawks were being “petty” and the situation should be resolved by now.

Per the ESPN radio segment, Schneider also had called a few other teams to see how they would deal with the situation — Schneider apparently being cognizant of how the Seahawks’ solution might affect the rest of the league.

On Friday, Pete Carroll told KIRO Radio, “The situation has stayed the same. There has been a lot of work done and a lot of conversations and stuff, but it just has not happened to get him here. … We love the guy, wish he’d be here, but he’s got a mindset that’s keeping him out.

“We always want him to come back, but we’re still focusing on what’s real — that’s getting our guys ready to play. Dion Bailey’s going to start and we’re going to have our rotations to take care of that position. We have to keep moving, so that’s what we’re doing. Unfortunately there is no change.”

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Rams

The Seahawks apparently are signing LB Nick Moody, a 2013 sixth-round pick by the 49ers. The move likely means Mike Morgan (hamstring) will miss more than just the opener. It’s possible the Hawks will place Morgan on IR (season or half-season). Moody is known as a good special-teams player, which is where Morgan makes his money.

Pete Carroll talked about the state of the team entering the opener, including the Kam Chancellor situation.

Defensive coordinator Kris Richard expressed optimism that Chancellor will return soon.

Rob Rang lists three reasons Chancellor’s holdout could end by next week.

CHAWK LINES

Fred Jackson was beloved in Buffalo, but he’s excited to come to Seattle, according to the Buffalo News.

Jackson said he called Marshawn Lynch and had him “put a bug” in the ears of Pete Carroll and John Schneider about signing Jackson.

Carroll said the Seahawks are not interested in trading Kam Chancellor.

Dave Boling wrote that Chancellor’s nonsensical holdout has defied his heroic persona.

If Chancellor misses the opener, it could cost him $517,647.

Remember, if Chancellor stays out all year, he still will be under contract for three more. And it will have cost him $6.55 million. The Hawks hold all of the cards for as long as they want to.

Russell Wilson worked on his speed this offseason and now runs a 4.47 40.

The Seahawks and Rams are on USA Today’s list of the five NFL teams with the biggest OL concerns. Against those stout defensive fronts, get ready for an ugly 9-6 slugfest.

CHAWK LINES

Who knew Sept. 1 was Marshawn Lynch Day?

First, “Big Daddy” celebrates by getting “intimate” with Skittles and saying “I do” on TV.

Then we’ve got the NFL announcing that Super Bowl Media Day — otherwise known as “Marshawn Mocks the NFL Day” — will become a prime-time affair. You know the ever talkative Lynch can’t wait.

And, in real football news, Lynch’s buddy from Buffalo, Fred Jackson, reportedly is headed to Seattle to take a physical.

CHAWK LINES -- Training camp new

Marshawn Lynch won’t have to pay his $75,000 fine for not talking after the NFC title game — provided he talks to the media going forward. So, be prepared for more variations of “I’m just here so I won’t get fined.”

Recovery Watergate is still overflowing with overreaction, with some people taking Russell Wilson’s comments far too seriously. Have a Recovery Glass of Wine and chill out, folks.

K.J. Wright said he felt like he gave up too many touchdowns last year — he is right — and he explained how he is going to fix it.

Tharold Simon thinks he’s going to compete for a starting gig. He also admits he was not prepared in the Super Bowl. Tell us something we don’t know, Simon. And, yeah, good luck with that starting job.

CHAWK LINES -- Training camp new

Michael Bennett made some waves this morning talking about mediocre QBs getting mega money, but he also said of his own contract dissatisfaction, “I can’t let my unhappiness trump my professionalism.”

Marshawn Lynch was fined $75,000 for not talking after the NFC title game, bringing his total fines from last year to $195,000 (as far as we know).

It appears Evan Mathis might be willing to play for an incentive-laden deal that paid him $3.5 million or so. The Hawks could do that.

Mathis is going to pick a team by the end of the week, agent Drew Rosenhaus said.

The Hawks also had free-agent center Samson Satele in for a visit.

While the Hawks consider adding a veteran, they will start the same five this week — Okung, Britt, Nowak, Sweezy, Gilliam.

Don’t worry about OL’s poor performance

Tom Cable on Day 2 of campWhile we chose to focus on the supernova bright spots in Seattle’s loss to Denver on Friday, plenty of people were dismayed by the poor performance of the offensive line.

As we said the other day, don’t worry about it.

You have to remember these facts: (1) Seattle has an inexperienced group, destined to struggle early; (2) it’s largely the same group that the Seahawks had last season, when they reached the Super Bowl; and (3) the running game is mostly a product of Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch anyway.

Rob Staton put together a nice analysis on the NFL’s problem in finding good linemen these days. It piggybacks comments Tom Cable made this offseason about college ruining offensive players.
