Antonio Brown? AB-solutely not

As the Seahawks come off their bye, they are making some expected additions. But there is one they AB-solutely should not make.

Pete Carroll said they are checking into soon-to-be-unsuspended Antonio Brown – a fABulously stupid idea. This is at least the third time the Seahawks have been linked to the headcase receiver. We can only hope it is the last and they aren’t serious.

Carroll explained it thus: “We have endeavored to be in on everything that’s going on and John (Schneider) has done a marvelous job of always being tuned in to what’s happening. And this is no exception. So we’ll see what happens as we go forward. But we’re tuned in to what’s happening there.

“Let’s wait and see what happens and all that. We do all of the homework we can think of doing. We will never think that we can leave a stone unturned. That’s how we approach everything. So we’ll continue to do that here.”

The Hawks would be major chuckleheads if they signed Brown – and they would get blasted by many fans, rightfully.

Will top 11 defenders play together again?

Logo -- At CarolinaFor some (many?) people, it strains credulity that the Seahawks are 11-3 and sitting in the No. 1 position in the NFC with two weeks to go.

Those folks think the Hawks simply aren’t good enough to beat New Orleans or Green Bay or San Francisco, citing Seattle’s historically low margin of victory and inability to beat any team handily.

But they did beat the 49ers already — and they did it with the defense Pete Carroll hoped he would have. The big question: Will he ever have it again this season?

Hawks have improved almost everywhere

Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson plan to be clapping about their offense a lot this season (Getty Images)A year ago, few people thought the Seahawks could play even .500 ball — due to a completely revamped defense and an offense that didn’t seem capable of winning many shootouts.

Well, as we predicted, the Hawks won 10 games and made the playoffs for the seventh time in Pete Carroll’s nine seasons (and, as we all know, should have beaten Dallas in the wild-card round).

This year, it seems plenty of people have not learned their lesson — still forecasting the Seahawks as an 8-8 or 9-7 team. The main concerns are pass rush and a youthful secondary, plus the permanent loss of Doug Baldwin in the receiving corps.

Carroll knows his pass rush is weaker than it was — “We gotta make something special out of it” — but he also knows his team is otherwise very stout. (UPDATE: The Hawks acquired pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney the day after this was first posted.)

After the Hawks beat the Raiders in the preseason finale, Carroll said, “We’re going to be a really good team. … We’re going to be hard to beat.”

He’s right. When the schedule came out, we predicted 11 or 12 wins. It’s still easy to see that because they look better at six seven of nine position groups.

Schneider speaks at Combine

chawk lines -- CombineHere are the key statements from John Schneider at the Combine today:

The GM expects Frank Clark to be a Seahawk but does not yet know whether he will end up using the franchise tag on him by Tuesday. (Or, if he does, he is not saying.)

Schneider has talked to Russell Wilson‘s agent, Mark Rodgers, about an extension, but that is not a priority at this stage of the offseason. Schneider also said he gets the impression Wilson wants to remain with the Seahawks. “I have no reason to believe otherwise — other than Internet rumors.”

Looks like Kendricks won’t be an option in 2019

kendricks mugIt was a long shot anyway, but the Seahawks almost definitely won’t have Mychal Kendricks in 2019.

His sentencing for insider trading was bumped back from late January to April 4. Considering the absolute minimum prison time he is expected to get is eight months, that seemingly removes him as a 2019 option. (Some hold out hope that he will get no time at all, but that would be a serious break with legal precedent for his kind of crime.)

If Kendricks ends up with no more than 15 months, it is possible Pete Carroll and John Schneider would want to bring him back in 2020.

Roster check (for now and future) as playoffs approach

Logo -- At San FranciscoThe Seattle defense is coming off its best game of the season — a dominating performance against Minnesota that showed this unit might be effective against great offenses in the playoffs.

But now it unfortunately has lost another player: Mychal Kendricks is out for the season after suffering a broken leg in his first game back from suspension. With K.J. Wright also out at least a couple more weeks, Austin Calitro will be called on to start again.

Meanwhile, Doug Baldwin is questionable again as the Seahawks face Richard Sherman and the “not middle of the road” 49ers for the second time in three weeks.

As Seattle gets set to clinch a playoff spot, here’s a status report on each position (with a look to the future, too):

Good news: Kendricks has a ‘definite’ suspension, will be back in December

Logo -- Los AngelesWhen the Seahawks signed Mychal Kendricks before Week 2, we figured it could be a really short marriage or else one that was interrupted by a suspension that lasted for as long as half the season.

The Hawks fortunately got three good games out of Kendricks while K.J. Wright was out, and then the NFL went the overly harsh route of suspending Kendricks indefinitely — which typically means beyond the season.

But, thanks to the doggedness of Kendricks and Pete Carroll, the linebacker will be back for the final month of the season and the playoffs after the NFL finally picked a definite suspension: the eight games we originally thought he might get.

Hawks expected short suspension for Kendricks

Logo -- Los AngelesPete Carroll and the Seahawks were surprised to learn Mychal Kendricks was suspended for more than just two or three games, which is the punishment they expected when they signed him after Week 1.

Kendricks, who is facing up to three years in prison for insider trading, was suspended indefinitely by the NFL on Tuesday. As we wrote, that probably means he is finished for the year — and until he returns from prison.

Carroll was clearly annoyed by the NFL’s decision.

Kendricks likely done until 2021

Seahawks bandagesIt looks like the Seahawks just lost three players for the season.

In addition to Earl Thomas and Will Dissly, who both were put on IR on Tuesday, Mychal Kendricks looks unlikely to play the rest of the way — he was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for his inside-trading case and is likely out of commission until after he finishes his prison sentence.

Positive news ahead of Arizona this time

at-arizona-logoThe last time the Seahawks traveled to Arizona, in November, they were already beaten up — and then lost Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor forever.

This time, the Seahawks enter their Arizona preparation with a lot of positive news: Doug Baldwin and Justin Britt returned to practice, Mychal Kendricks will be available again this week, and Pete Carroll and Earl Thomas are “in a good place” after the non-practice drama last week.
