Hawks find balance with total team win over Arizona

The Seahawks needed this win. They needed to avoid the first three-game losing streak of Russell Wilson’s career. They needed to beat Arizona to get a big win in the NFC West and finally beat another good team after losing to three over the last four weeks.

They got it thanks to a balanced offensive attack and a defense that played its best game of the season, finishing with a big sack by Carlos Dunlap that gave the Hawks a 28-21 win.

Dunlap tallied two sacks, three QB hits and two tackles for loss against Kyler Murray and company. His second sack finished Murray and the Cardinals on their final try for the end zone.

Wilson & Co. can’t give up points like that

The Seahawks’ utterly avoidable 37-34 overtime loss in Arizona was a reminder that this team plays on thin margins and cannot afford three interceptions from its quarterback if it has designs of going very far in the playoffs.

Russell Wilson’s three turnovers, plus a big gaffe by Benson Mayowa, ruined Tyler Lockett’s best NFL game and made moot an unbelievable touchdown-saving tackle by DK Metcalf as Arizona made the winning 48-yard field goal with 20 seconds left in overtime. That knocked Seattle from its undefeated perch and also handed the Hawks their first loss in Arizona since Wilson’s rookie year (they had been 6-0-1).

More unfamiliar faces, but Carroll knows this AIR-izona offense

at-arizona-logoThe Seahawks have been fighting in a dark alley so far this season — feeling their way against unfamiliar foes.

First it was new Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor, who brought schemes Pete Carroll and his staff were not ready for and nearly beat the Hawks with them. Then it was Mason Rudolph, who replaced injured Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh and almost rallied the Steelers. Last week, it was Teddy Bridgewater replacing injured Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara breaking tackles and leading the Saints to a surprisingly easy win.

Now Seattle faces another unfamiliar coach and QB as the Hawks head to dreaded Glendale to take on Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray’s AIR-izona Raid offense.

Carroll knows plenty about the Air Raid, though — since it is just an offshoot of the old run-n-shoot. The difference is the mobile young quarterback running it, and the Hawks need to join the other defenses that have made it hard on this year’s No. 1 draft pick.

Schneider’s big Combine mission: Set up trades

Schneider at combineThis week’s wild Russell Wilson rumor aside, it has been a quiet stretch in Seahawks Land — no action since the team signed Paxton Lynch in mid-January. Like most of the rest of the league, the Hawks have been heads-down planning offseason moves and prepping for next week’s Combine.

John Schneider will have three tasks in Indy. Beyond scouting players and gauging the free-agent market, the biggest mission will be laying the groundwork for possible draft trades.
