Hawks should be open to Schneider trade

In 1999, the Seahawks paid a second-round pick to Green Bay for Mike Holmgren, who took over as coach and general manager. These Hawks should consider trading John Schneider for similar compensation after this season.

Scuttlebutt says Schneider may become a free agent in 2022, if the Seahawks do not increase his pay toward the top end of the league’s GM payroll. And Detroit reportedly is interested in trying to pry him from Seattle this year.

The Hawks should be willing to make a trade, if Detroit is willing to give up a first-rounder or perhaps a second and something else.

The Quandre quandary

Quandre Diggs received a nice early Christmas present, getting his first Pro Bowl spot. The next natural question: Is it the first of many to come in Seattle or will he be a short-timer here? Because his price to stay just went up.

The selection surprised a number of fans, because Diggs seemingly has not made a lot of impact plays this season. But the fact is he leads Seattle with four interceptions, which is tied for fourth in the NFL and tied for tops among NFC safeties with Minnesota’s Harrison Smith. Diggs is also tied with Smith with nine pass breakups, second among NFC safeties.

Clearly NFL people thought he deserved the Pro Bowl selection over the longtime Vikings star, and those who watch the All-22 film, which shows Diggs’ work on the back end of the secondary, tend to agree (although Pro Football Focus picked New Orleans’ Marcus Williams over Diggs).

Schneider’s future should depend on Adams & Taylor

The spotlight is on Seattle’s GM this week as the Seahawks and Jamal Adams face the Jets and Darrell Taylor’s future remains a mystery.

John Schneider’s job security, quite frankly, should depend on two things: Whether he re-signs Adams and whether Taylor ever plays. If neither happens in 2021, the last year of Schneider’s deal, the GM should not be re-signed.  

This is not just about the two big moves to get those guys this year — deals that cost the Seahawks five high draft picks. It’s about a GM who has had a lot more failures than successes over the past seven years, who is still living off his historic 2010-12 drafts, who has whiffed at the top of his last eight drafts way too often, who rarely makes good decisions in free agency, who is not very creative with the salary cap and who for several years has been making it up as he goes, with no long-term plan.

Gordon’s second chance with Hawks is here: ‘Hopefully it’s better than last time’

John Schneider has never been shy about betting on veteran talent – whether they’re big trades or no-risk deals.

Josh Gordon might be the first guy Schneider has taken a cheap flyer on twice. The troubled but talented receiver is back, conditionally reinstated by the NFL and eligible to play for the Hawks in Week 16 against the Rams (if he’s ready that fast).

‘This is just the start’: Dunlap is a keeper, extensions expected

It took almost two years, but it looks like John Schneider finally found Seattle’s next star pass rusher. And he had better plan to keep him beyond 2021.

In three short games, veteran star Carlos Dunlap has proven to be everything we expected — a grand steal of a deal from the Bengals – and he clearly should be in Seattle’s plans next year and beyond.

More deals coming?

The Seahawks apparently are still in the trade game, both as potential buyers and sellers. Could they marry the two to add another pass rusher?

After John Schneider’s typical shrewd move to add an impact veteran – getting Carlos Dunlap from Cincinnati for B.J. Finney and a seventh-rounder – word is the GM may indeed still be on the lookout for another pass rusher.  

The ideal options would be veteran stars Ryan Kerrigan and Melvin Ingram, with young Takk McKinley and Chase Winovich possible secondary choices. The Hawks reportedly inquired about Dallas pass rusher Aldon Smith, but were rebuffed.

Schneider finally addresses biggest offseason whiff

Most observers are giving John Schneider major kudos for once again filling a big roster hole by taking advantage of another team’s dysfunction.

The trade for Carlos Dunlap – Schneider’s third October deal in four years — certainly was needed, and Schneider did well to get it done for a mere seventh-round pick and overpriced backup center B.J. Finney, as Cincinnati clearly was eager to get rid of Dunlap. (The GM would do better to add another pass rusher, too.)

But let’s not forget this is the continuation of an ongoing theme: The Seahawks were in this mess because Schneider created it – and then failed to fix it until now, maybe only for now.

Wilson obviously does not understand how dangerous Brown is

Just like Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson does not get it.

That is obvious based on the quarterback’s words about Antonio Brown, a seemingly mentally ill former NFL star whom Wilson thinks he and the Seahawks can help redeem while getting Brown’s talent in return.

Wilson is a good human, a kind and charitable guy strongly motivated by his faith in God. That faith was evident again Thursday as he talked about Brown, with whom he said he has become friends over the last five years. Wilson said, “I pray that he can continue to grow, just like anybody.” Also true to his Christian faith, Wilson added, “I try not to judge people.”

Wilson, 31, is apparently too young or too religious to understand it is necessary to judge people. You must weigh them against your principles so you know whether you should allow them into your life. If Wilson were wise enough to do that, we probably would not be having this talk right now.

Roster report: Defensive Help coming, but probably not via trade

A third of the way through the season, the Seahawks have weathered a bunch of defensive injuries and some historically bad play on that side to open 5-0.

As they take their bye this week, reinforcements are coming for the league’s last-ranked defense, which has helped the 5-0 start through big stops and turnovers. Jamal Adams, Jordyn Brooks and Rasheem Green are all expected back from injuries shortly, and former All-Pro run stopper Damon Harrison should make his debut as well.

But what about that anemic pass rush?

Is this the last hurrah for Carson & Griffin?

Chris Carson and Shaquill Griffin are doing what they can to make their cases for new contracts in 2021.

Both were big parts of the Seahawks’ win in Miami, Carson scoring twice and tallying 100 total yards and Griffin picking off a pass and preventing a late touchdown as they helped Seattle improve to 4-0.

But fans need to steel themselves to the idea that this season could be the last hurrah for the best draft picks from Seattle’s 2017 class. Even more reason – like we need more than one — for the Hawks to win another Super Bowl now.
