Wilson carried offense until he dropped ball

Before Kam Chancellor and the referees combined to steal the headlines in Seattle’s win over Detroit on Monday, the biggest story was the play of Russell Wilson.

With Marshawn Lynch out and almost no help from his blockers, the quarterback did everything he could for three-plus quarters to keep the Seahawks ahead. And then he dispelled all of that magic with one huge fumble that was returned for a touchdown and put Detroit in position to go ahead in the final two minutes.

Wilson was sacked six times — two or three were his fault for holding the ball too long — and was almost constantly on the run. He is on pace to be sacked 72 times, which would tie Randall Cunningham (1986) for No. 2 in NFL history (David Carr was sacked 76 times in 2002).

Despite the pressure, Wilson completed 20 of 26 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions. He ran his Monday night record to 5-0, with 10 TD passes and no picks.

The Seahawks activated Kam Chancellor and waived Dion Bailey on Saturday. Bailey could end up back on the practice squad.

As Chancellor returns, the Seahawks are starting over.

CHAWK LINES, Week 2: At Green Bay

Controversy king Mike Freeman is at it again, claiming Jimmy Graham is ready to “explode” if he doesn’t get the ball. Freeman is the same dude who put out the inflammatory report last year claiming there was a schism in the locker room over Russell Wilson, who wasn’t black enough for some teammates. Pay no mind to his anti-Seahawk ramblings.

On a more constructive note, Bob Condotta reviewed every pass play that might have been able to go to Graham and determined what we all knew: He could have been more involved.

At 0-2, the Seahawks look a lot like last year’s Super Bowl team.

Carroll on Graham: ‘We want him to be a big part of the offense’

Pete Carroll is just as frustrated as everyone else that Jimmy Graham was invisible Sunday night, especially when the Seahawks planned to have the Pro Bowl tight end heavily involved from the beginning, and the coach promises Graham will be more involved going forward.

Graham caught one pass in the first half of the opener in St. Louis, but Russell Wilson went to him more in the second half and he finished with six catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. But in Green Bay he was thrown to just twice and caught one (for 11 yards).

“I’m disappointed because … we want him to be a big part of the offense,” Carroll said. “(Six) balls in the first game and a touchdown pass. (Six) balls is a pretty good day. This day it didn’t work out. We were trying to go to him four out of the first five passes.”

Asked why Wilson did not throw to Graham on those plays, Carroll said, “There’s all kinds of things that happen. We get flustered here or there, get pushed away from the route where it’s going. There’s all kinds of stuff that happens and it isn’t any one thing. If it was one thing, it’d be really easy. It’s a variety of things that happen in the route.”

Week 2: At Green Bay

Carroll: Time to get season started

“We’re going to go back to work and get the season started.”

The Seahawks were their own worst enemy vs. the Packers on Sunday, as they lost by double digits (27-17) for the first time since 2011.

Kind of like the loss to the Rams, the errors came from every corner. Michael Bennett jumped offsides three times, Richard Sherman gave up two big plays, Darrell Bevell and Russell Wilson put together another subpar performance, the offensive line was horrible in the first quarter, Jimmy Graham was nowhere to be found, the Seahawks still can’t run a screen play to save their lives, and the defense once again got picked apart by the short passing game.

After that game, some fans probably are wishing Bennett had held out alongside Kam Chancellor. Bennett led the NFL with 13 pre-snap penalties in 2014, and he now has five in two games this season.

Week 2: At Green Bay

Hawks-Packers packed with drama since 1999

As the Seahawks prepare to travel to Green Bay for the first time since 2009 — and the first time under Pete Carroll — the Packers are itching for revenge.

They won’t tell you that; but, after their 2014 season started and ended with embarrassing losses to the Seahawks — one by blowout and the other via historic comeback/meltdown — of course they want retribution.

It’s just the latest dramatic meeting between the two franchises, which have been deeply intertwined since 1999.

This will be the first in-season trip back to Green Bay for John Schneider since he left the Packers to become Seattle’s GM in 2010. It also will be besieged OC Darrell Bevell’s first game back in his home state since he was coaching the Vikings in 2010. It also will mark the return of one-time Wisconsin star Russell Wilson.

Newer Seahawks fans — and there are plenty of them — might think the Packers-Seahawks series consists of three games: the Hawks’ infamous Fail Mary victory on a Monday night in 2012, Seattle’s 20-point win in the opening game of last season and Seattle’s miracle comeback in a 28-22 overtime win in the NFC title game.

But this series was full of great matchups back when Mike Holmgren and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck were leading the Hawks against their old team — led by Brett Favre — and this will be the 12th meeting since 1999.

CHAWK LINES, Week 1: At St. Louis

Field Gulls passed on the latest on Kam Chancellor: (1) Teammates have come to John Schneider and Pete Carroll asking them to resolve the situation and get Chancellor in and (2) they were close to a deal in mid-August, but it fell apart. Also, check out the homage to “Back to the Future” in the Field Gulls pic.

The Seahawks lamented missed tackles and big passing plays (eight of more than 20 yards). Cliff Avril said, “It felt like we gave up the most explosive plays that we’ve given up since I’ve been here.”

Dion Bailey said he should have just tackled Lance Kendricks and taken the pass-interference penalty when Bailey fell while trying to cover the tight end.

Don’t blame Bailey for all of the defense’s problems though. Tight ends were a big problem for them last season, even with Chancellor.

The Rams once again pummeled Russell Wilson, sacking him six times for the third time in his seven games against them. “Those guys are really good up front, and they got the best of us today,” said Russell Okung, who gave up the final sack.

Believe it or not, Kam Chancellor says he’s holding out over a matter of $900,000. And he apparently wants to do this again in two years.

Chancellor will not play Sunday, Pete Carroll said, adding he is “disappointed in this, very much so.”

Anonymous teammates told ESPN they don’t expect Chancellor to play this year and expect the Hawks to win without him.

The Seahawks waived Robert Turbin on an injury settlement. If he is unclaimed, he will become free to sign with any team. His high ankle sprain was expected to keep him out for five weeks. The Hawks could bring him back late in the season if he does not end up with another team.

Fred Jackson was beloved in Buffalo, but he’s excited to come to Seattle, according to the Buffalo News.

Jackson said he called Marshawn Lynch and had him “put a bug” in the ears of Pete Carroll and John Schneider about signing Jackson.

Carroll said the Seahawks are not interested in trading Kam Chancellor.

Dave Boling wrote that Chancellor’s nonsensical holdout has defied his heroic persona.

If Chancellor misses the opener, it could cost him $517,647.

Remember, if Chancellor stays out all year, he still will be under contract for three more. And it will have cost him $6.55 million. The Hawks hold all of the cards for as long as they want to.

Russell Wilson worked on his speed this offseason and now runs a 4.47 40.

The Seahawks and Rams are on USA Today’s list of the five NFL teams with the biggest OL concerns. Against those stout defensive fronts, get ready for an ugly 9-6 slugfest.

Who knew Sept. 1 was Marshawn Lynch Day?

First, “Big Daddy” celebrates by getting “intimate” with Skittles and saying “I do” on TV.

Then we’ve got the NFL announcing that Super Bowl Media Day — otherwise known as “Marshawn Mocks the NFL Day” — will become a prime-time affair. You know the ever talkative Lynch can’t wait.

And, in real football news, Lynch’s buddy from Buffalo, Fred Jackson, reportedly is headed to Seattle to take a physical.
