CHAWK LINES -- Chiefs at Hawks

Rees Odhiambo was “very solid” in his first game taking over for George Fant, Pete Carroll said.

Chris Carson looked very capable of being the starting running back, as we think he will at some point.

Jermaine Kearse had his best game of the preseason, after seemingly being pushed aside by Kasen Williams.

Austin Davis outplayed Trevone Boykin, but Carroll made it sound like that didn’t matter.

J.D. McKissic showed his versatility, and Bob Condotta continues to think he will make the team.

The running game looked the best yet.

Russell Wilson made a bad decision/throw on a near-pick, but he otherwise has had a great preseason.

David Bass continues to make a strong push for a roster spot.

Training camp logo2The Seahawks began training camp today with some pretty simple edicts: Build an offensive line, foster better depth and recreate the chemistry that helped them to Super Bowls in 2013 and 2014.

The Seahawks have been one of the best teams in the league the last five years — No. 3 in wins (56) behind New England (62) and Denver (59) — but they have been on a steady decline since winning Super Bowl XLVIII.

After winning 36 games from 2012 to 2014, the Seahawks have won 20 over the past two years. Double-digit wins are always a sign of success, but it has been a disappointment to see the Seahawks fade — from the Patriots’ 1-yard line in XLIX to bad playoff losses the last two years.

QB leapfrog: Wilson will make another jump in 2019

Wilson signing contractQuarterback contracts are just a game of leapfrog, so it’s no surprise to see Derek Carr jumping over Andrew Luck as the highest-paid passer in the NFL.

It’s easy to see where the market is going — a few more guys will leap Carr before the Seahawks and Russell Wilson start talking extension in a couple of years.

At least four more deals are likely to exceed Carr’s $25 million a year, and the APY could be around $30 million by 2020.

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks OTAs & minicamp

Michael Bennett and Richard Sherman both backed Russell Wilson in the wake of rift reports.

Bennett also shared more of his life philosophies (most of which make great sense).

Sherman came across as happy and ready to be a team player again.

Sherman’s attitude was one of several reasons Pete Carroll called it a “very successful offseason.”

Carroll said Jimmy Graham and Earl Thomas were the most impressive players this offseason.

Can Seahawks overcome this dysfunction?

Logo -- OTAsPete Carroll says Seattle’s “locker room is in great shape” and the Super Bowl XLIX debacle “isn’t an issue to us at all,” but there’s way too much smoke to think that fire has been entirely extinguished.

Warren Moon is among those who think the Hawks will never win another Super Bowl as long as they continue to have so much discord. But the Seahawks — Carroll, Russell Wilson, Doug Baldwin, et al. — say they can win even though Richard Sherman and some other defenders apparently have issues with Carroll and Wilson.

So which perspective is right? Can they overcome the dysfunction to win another title? Or do they need to get rid of Sherman and any other major malcontents to have a shot?

Let’s move on from the YCK bug

Logo -- Free agencyCall it the YCK bug. This whole Colin Kaepernick drama is as much a non-issue as Y2K was.

Kaepernick was never going to challenge Russell Wilson for the Seahawks’ starting quarterback job — he’s simply not good enough — and Pete Carroll decided the controversial former 49er was not a fit for Seattle even as a backup.

Whether Carroll didn’t think he fit Seattle’s offense or whether the coach simply didn’t feel like adding more potential drama to a locker room already teeming with it, he made the right choice.

Schedule

After Green Bay, schedule is not bad

2017 skedAside from a rough opener in Green Bay, the Seahawks got as good a schedule as they could have asked for as the NFL slate was announced Thursday.

They have no cold-weather games, only one 10 a.m. game and no back-to-back road games. They also play three of their four prime-time games at home and have a decently placed Week 6 bye.

The Seahawks will start the season with a very familiar foe as they head to Green Bay to play the Packers for the sixth time in six years. This one will bring a new twist as Eddie Lacy faces his old Packers teammates to open the season.

The Seahawks have not fared well in Green Bay, losing seven straight there by an average of 18.9 points, including a 38-10 blowout last December in which Russell Wilson played perhaps the worst game of his career.

Logo -- Free agencyThe Combine is over and the league year (i.e., free agency and trading) is about to start, so it’s a perfect time to do a status check on the Seahawks, including free agency rumors and mock drafts:

QUARTERBACK
Status: Russell Wilson is healthy, working out in California and taking weird pictures with his family. The Hawks might look at bringing in someone to challenge Trevone Boykin for the No. 2 spot.
Free agents: None.
FA and draft rumors: More than one person has speculated that Colin Kaepernick, impending former 49er, could join his former nemeses as Wilson’s backup.

RUNNING BACK
Status: Pete Carroll is hoping for a healthy Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise this year. Alex Collins also came on late last season and could be a bigger factor in 2017. The fullback position could be stacked if both Brandon Cottom and Marcel Reece are back.
Free agents: FB Marcel Reece, FB Will Tukuafu.
FA and draft rumors: Adrian Peterson reportedly wants to play for Oakland, Seattle or New England. The Hawks are unlikely to offer him much, so the Raiders seem his best option. … Oklahama State’s Chris Carson (6-0, 218) was projected to Seattle in the seventh round of Rob Staton’s most recent mock.

Are Hawks prepping to court Campbell?

campbell-wilsonThere’s a lot of chatter from fans wanting the Seahawks to pursue Calais Campbell in free agency to improve their interior pass rush.

On first blush, it seems like a lot of wishful thinking — John Schneider usually goes younger and cheaper on veteran defensive linemen — but there are increasing signs the Hawks could indeed make a play for the 30-year-old Arizona tackle.

Seattle’s hiring of his former college position coach, Clint Hurtt, adds to the intrigue created by Russell Wilson, who appeared to be recruiting Campbell after their December game.

Don’t expect any big additions on O-line

A year ago, the Seahawks’ obvious priority was to build an almost entirely new offensive line. They ended up with three first-time starters, a fourth in a new position and a fifth who was only in his second year at his spot.

Everyone hoped against hope that bunch of neophytes would not be this Super Bowl contender’s undoing. But, along with a few key injuries, it was.

Despite the apparent lack of progress, Pete Carroll thinks they have set a foundation and the continuity will help the group improve even if the club does nothing to add to the unit. He also made it clear they do not plan to spend much money on the line.
