Carroll’s undisciplined Hawks win West

logo-green-bayPete Carroll has never been much of a disciplinarian. He’s a free spirit who encourages the same in his players.

It’s partly why his team is always at the top of the league in penalties. It’s also why his players feel free to express themselves — even if they make Carroll look like a fool.

They certainly did Thursday night in a division-clinching 24-3 win over the Rams.

The Hawks committed 13 penalties — 10 of them mental errors that reflected that well-documented lack of discipline. And Richard Sherman went off on his coaches again.

If the Seahawks had been playing almost anyone other than the Rams and rookie QB Jared Goff, Seattle might have lost that game.

CHAWK LINES -- Rams at Seahawks

The Seahawks are NFC West champs, but are they good enough to be any more than that?

It was a night of redemption for Russell Wilson.

Michael Bennett felt fine after wrenching his neck on a hellish hit.

Jon Ryan was taken to the hospital after suffering a concussion during a crazy run off a fake punt.

Bennett and the defensive line had a feeding frenzy against rookie QB Jared Goff.

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Packers

The Seahawks could win the NFC West this week.

The Seahawks put Earl Thomas on IR and brought back Jeron Johnson, who was with them in 2011-14.

Pete Carroll offered injury updates on Paul Richardson, Luke Willson and more.

The Seahawks, who have been scrambling for running backs since releasing Christine Michael, will see him again this week. He’s not concerned with payback.

Hawks return to setting season highs

logo-carolinaApparently Pete Carroll was right: That dud in Tampa in Week 12 was an exception to the Seahawks’ new rule.

Their explosion in a prime-time payback game vs. Carolina was their third season-best performance in the past four weeks.

In the 40-7 blowout, they set season highs for points and rushing (240) and total (534) yards as Thomas Rawls and Tyler Lockett showed what they can do when healthy.

On a night Marshawn Lynch showed up on the sideline, Rawls had his best game of the season: 106 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

CHAWK LINES -- Panthers at Seahawks

The Seahawks are getting back a bunch of injured starters.

The Panthers, meanwhile, still have all kinds of injury issues.

Ron Rivera called the offensive line “a catastrophe.”

The Seahawks are going with Bradley Sowell at right tackle.

Richard Sherman called this season “karma” for Cam Newton.

Topic of the day: Futures of Chancellor, Bennett

Salary cap logoThe futures of three Seahawks came into question again Wednesday amid a flurry of reports, making us wonder what the team is going to do with Kam Chancellor, Michael Bennett and Garry Gilliam after this season.

In an ESPN The Magazine piece, Chancellor talked about how his holdout affected the Legion of Boom (something we surmised throughout last season) and how he apologized to Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman for letting them down.

We always figured his holdout was motivated by his constant battle with injuries and desire to have as much financial security as possible, and he shed more light on that thought with this tidbit: He spent three days in the hospital with internal bleeding after the Seahawks’ 43-8 domination of Denver in Super Bowl XLVIII.

While that interview revealed more about Chancellor’s situation, Bennett’s agent sent a cryptic tweet Wednesday that might have referenced contract talks with the Seahawks. The “deal” also could have been some other business, but most think it meant he was talking with John Schneider again — as they reportedly did in July.

Both of Wednesday’s revelations raise the question again: What will the Hawks do with their two defensive leaders?

Hawks looking thin in backfields for Tampa

Seahawks bandagesThe Seahawks have weathered a few injuries to key players — Russell Wilson, Kam Chancellor and Michael Bennett, especially — this season, but they have yet to endure the kind of bloodbath they took in their 26-15 win over Philly on Sunday.

No fewer than 10 players left the game with various ailments, and the Hawks are looking at playing without at least four key guys next Sunday in Tampa Bay.

The biggest concerns this week are Legion of Boomers Earl Thomas and DeShawn Shead, plus the running back position.

Bennett earning that raise while injured

bennett-surgeryMichael Bennett has made a bunch of money the past couple of weeks — without playing a down.

If there were any doubt Bennett deserved a raise on his bargain-basement deal, the past three games have wiped it out.

Long upset over his undervalued contract, Bennett nonetheless had showed up and played great for the last two seasons-plus. But now a knee injury has forced him into an involuntary holdout that has shown everyone just how underpaid he is.

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Cardinals

Michael Bennett says he will play at Arizona on Sunday night. Frank Clark is expected back as well, but Kam Chancellor’s status is unknown.

Luke Willson had arthroscopic surgery Tuesday and expects to be back “in no time.” Expect him to miss 2-4 weeks.

The Seahawks also put Garrison Smith on IR and brought back Sealver Siliga.

Pete Carroll said Richard Sherman’s outburst sidetracked the defense for a bit but they recovered and “are stronger for that.”

The Arizona Cardinals look to be hitting their stride as they prepare to host the Hawks on Sunday night.

Russell Wilson was mic’d up for the Atlanta game and was every bit the positive force he always is.
