Carroll, Schneider answer roster questions

Draft -- Schneider and CarrollAt the NFL owners meetings this week, Pete Carroll and John Schneider gave us a better idea of where Seattle’s seven new veterans (not counting kickers) might fit.

We also learned that Marshawn Lynch is indeed contemplating a return and the Seahawks really have heard from teams (including the Patriots) gauging a trade for Richard Sherman.

On top of that, Carroll and Schneider addressed their backup quarterback situation, which is a little hazy in light of Trevone Boykin’s recent arrest — but won’t include Colin Kaepernick.

Let’s take a look at the key comments from Carroll and Schneider, by position, courtesy of Bob Condotta and John Boyle of Seahawks.com:

Carroll: ‘I want to be physical’

Logo -- Free agencyIn his radio interviews Tuesday, Pete Carroll stated what already has become very clear in the first week of free agency: The Seahawks are going to get back to their ground-and-pound ways.

The signings of Luke Joeckel and Eddie Lacy, along with the hot pursuit of T.J. Lang, were clear signs the Hawks want to get their running game in gear again, and Carroll has made that his No. 1 offseason priority.

“I want to be physical,” he told KJR’s Ian Furness. “I want to make sure that everybody that plays us has to get ready for a hard-nosed football game at the line of scrimmage.

“When our running game is right and we’re balanced out, we’re the most dangerous team,” he added. “I’m going to do everything I can to keep it that way.”

Post-Combine/pre-free agency status report

Logo -- Free agencyThe Combine is over and the league year (i.e., free agency and trading) is about to start, so it’s a perfect time to do a status check on the Seahawks, including free agency rumors and mock drafts:

QUARTERBACK
Status: Russell Wilson is healthy, working out in California and taking weird pictures with his family. The Hawks might look at bringing in someone to challenge Trevone Boykin for the No. 2 spot.
Free agents: None.
FA and draft rumors: More than one person has speculated that Colin Kaepernick, impending former 49er, could join his former nemeses as Wilson’s backup.

RUNNING BACK
Status: Pete Carroll is hoping for a healthy Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise this year. Alex Collins also came on late last season and could be a bigger factor in 2017. The fullback position could be stacked if both Brandon Cottom and Marcel Reece are back.
Free agents: FB Marcel Reece, FB Will Tukuafu.
FA and draft rumors: Adrian Peterson reportedly wants to play for Oakland, Seattle or New England. The Hawks are unlikely to offer him much, so the Raiders seem his best option. … Oklahama State’s Chris Carson (6-0, 218) was projected to Seattle in the seventh round of Rob Staton’s most recent mock.

Seahawks need to keep running it in Atlanta

logo-playoffsEveryone’s going gaga over the resurgent rushing performance of Thomas Rawls and the offensive line in Seattle’s 26-6 win over Detroit. But the proof will be in Atlanta.

As expected, the Seahawks are headed there for a rematch with Dan Quinn’s Falcons and a chance to redeem their 2012 playoff loss. To do it, they will have to run the ball as well as they did against the Lions — when the linemen seemingly channeled former All-Pro Steve Hutchinson after he raised the 12 flag.

Yeah, the Hawks beat Atlanta 26-24 in Week 6 without a running game (Christine Michael led an attack that garnered just 76 yards). But they wouldn’t have won without Earl Thomas, who had a stellar game despite the defense’s breakdowns in the third quarter.

Thomas won’t be around to help combat Matt Ryan’s prolific offense this time, which is where the running game comes in: Seattle needs to play keepaway.

Injured Thomas on Seahawks: ‘We don’t have all our parts’

logo-playoffsEarl Thomas might not be with the Seahawks on the field, but there is no doubt he is with them in spirit.

He has been actively cheerleading via Twitter since he got hurt, sometimes with hilarious comments.

He also held a chat via The Seattle Times on Thursday, during which he said he is feeling pretty good after surgery on his broken leg, misses the game and feels like the team is not as good without him.

2017 season already off to bad start

Seahawks bandagesIt has been a long time since the Seahawks started a season at full strength. They won’t do it in 2017 either.

Tyler Lockett will require up to nine months to come back from a gruesome broken leg, which means he might end up on PUP to start the season. For the second time in three years, Earl Thomas also will be coming off a serious injury (also a broken leg) and trying to find his playing confidence as the 2017 season starts.

Pete Carroll told reporters he expects Lockett back for 2017 camp; but, even if he does make it, he will be brought along slowly – making it the third straight year the Hawks will start at less than full strength.

The Seahawks have gone through the same thing for most of the last four years. In 2013, it was Chris Clemons (ACL) and Percy Harvin (hip). In 2015, it was Thomas (shoulder), Jeremy Lane (arm and ACL) and Paul Richardson (ACL). This year, it was Jimmy Graham (patellar tendon) and Thomas Rawls (broken ankle).

On top of that, Rawls’ durability is a major question after a broken ankle, broken leg and now a shoulder problem. He’s a tough runner, but he batters his body too much and seems destined to never play a full season. With C.J. Prosise even more NFL-fragile, the Hawks will have to address running back in the offseason.

Alex Collins ran well in the second half vs. Arizona – his best look since the preseason. But the Hawks, who have given the ball to 10 running backs this season, almost surely will add more backs in 2017.

Hawks show no signs of being Super this year

logo-arizonaIn Week 16 of the 2013 season, the Seahawks lost at home to Arizona — putting the pressure on to clinch the No. 1 seed in Week 17. They did that and then went on to win the Super Bowl.

This season was set up to be a carbon copy of 2013, but just about the only thing that has followed 2013 form has been the Week 16 home loss to Arizona.

Unlike 2013, this Seattle team has no shot at the No. 1 seed. And it needs help to claim a bye. In fact, this crew will be lucky to win the one home playoff game it is guaranteed.

How much longer will LOB stay together?

Earl Thomas and Pete Carroll (The Seattle Times via Twitter)The Legion of Boom has spearheaded one of the great defenses in NFL history, but it’s fair to wonder how much longer the trio of Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor will remain together.

The crew has turned into the Legion of Drama over the past year. Last season, Chancellor created a big stir with a holdout that messed up the defense, and Thomas played tentatively for half the season as he returned from a bad shoulder injury.

The drama has continued this year, with Thomas injured again and talking retirement, Chancellor missing more time with injuries and Sherman sounding off every week about something.

CHAWK LINES -- Cardinals at Seahawks

Cliff Avril made the Pro Bowl for the first time, alongside Bobby Wagner, Michael Bennett and Richard Sherman.

Sherman’s sideline rant from the last game is still a big topic, which Sherman doesn’t like.

Darrell Bevell said he and Sherman have talked and are in “a good place.”

Earl Thomas reiterates he has not ruled out retirement.

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Packers

The Seahawks could win the NFC West this week.

The Seahawks put Earl Thomas on IR and brought back Jeron Johnson, who was with them in 2011-14.

Pete Carroll offered injury updates on Paul Richardson, Luke Willson and more.

The Seahawks, who have been scrambling for running backs since releasing Christine Michael, will see him again this week. He’s not concerned with payback.
