Hawks show no signs of being Super this year

logo-arizonaIn Week 16 of the 2013 season, the Seahawks lost at home to Arizona — putting the pressure on to clinch the No. 1 seed in Week 17. They did that and then went on to win the Super Bowl.

This season was set up to be a carbon copy of 2013, but just about the only thing that has followed 2013 form has been the Week 16 home loss to Arizona.

Unlike 2013, this Seattle team has no shot at the No. 1 seed. And it needs help to claim a bye. In fact, this crew will be lucky to win the one home playoff game it is guaranteed.

CHAWK LINES -- Rams at Seahawks

The Seahawks are NFC West champs, but are they good enough to be any more than that?

It was a night of redemption for Russell Wilson.

Michael Bennett felt fine after wrenching his neck on a hellish hit.

Jon Ryan was taken to the hospital after suffering a concussion during a crazy run off a fake punt.

Bennett and the defensive line had a feeding frenzy against rookie QB Jared Goff.

Hawks return to setting season highs

logo-carolinaApparently Pete Carroll was right: That dud in Tampa in Week 12 was an exception to the Seahawks’ new rule.

Their explosion in a prime-time payback game vs. Carolina was their third season-best performance in the past four weeks.

In the 40-7 blowout, they set season highs for points and rushing (240) and total (534) yards as Thomas Rawls and Tyler Lockett showed what they can do when healthy.

On a night Marshawn Lynch showed up on the sideline, Rawls had his best game of the season: 106 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

State of the team, Week 11: Philadelphia

Just like 2014, Hawks pass test vs. Eagles

logo-philadelphiaIn 2014, the last time the Seahawks put together a Super Bowl run, their proving game came in Week 14 at the Philadelphia Eagles.

That game was more of a test for Seattle’s No. 1 defense, which had built its ranking on the backs of some bad offenses and faced a big test against the league’s fourth-ranked offense. The Hawks dominated Chip Kelly’s Eagles, winning 24-14, and did not lose again that season.

This Eagles game brought a different challenge: The league’s No. 3 scoring defense against Seattle’s rollercoaster offense.

The Seahawks were coming off two pretty decent offensive games against AFC East teams Buffalo and New England, but the Eagles’ front posed a much bigger challenge.

Just like the defense in 2014, the offense proved itself in fine fashion. The Hawks put up a season-high 439 yards in a 26-15 victory that featured a bevy of big plays, a fully healthy Russell Wilson, a much more explosive running game and a resilient offensive line.

Pete Carroll said the offensive coaches “cut ’em loose” against Buffalo, plus other observations.

Jimmy Graham was simply awesome vs. Buffalo.

Richard Sherman showed everyone a great photo of him touching the ball on his premature field-goal block attempt.

Kicker Dan Carpenter’s wife went Donald Trump on Sherman. Nasty woman.

Tyler Lockett looked back to health vs. Buffalo, and Tyvis Powell gave him a hell of a block, too.

Kam Chancellor and Frank Clark are game-time decisions for ATL-SEA.

The weather is expected to be a big player in the game.

The Seahawks had great things to say about Dan Quinn, their former DC who brings the Falcons to town this weekend.

Julio Jones vs. Richard Sherman is the matchup everyone wants to see.

But K.J. Wright said this “is a linebacker’s game,” and Bobby Wagner said he thinks he and Wright are up to the big challenge of stopping Atlanta RBs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman.

CHAWK LINES -- 49ers at Seahawks

Russell Wilson said “last week was a battle” and his ankle is feeling better.

Thomas Rawls is doubtful with a shin injury, and Tyler Lockett is listed as questionable.

Rawls has been too overzealous and needs to slow down a bit once he is back out there, coaches say.

Lockett said, “As long as I’m alive, I’ll keep on fighting.”

Jimmy Graham will “continue to grow with us,” Darrell Bevell said.

Wilson, fast-finishing Hawks in midseason form

Dallas logoSeattle’s third preseason game — the one that most resembles the real thing — definitely looked like the real thing Thursday.

As usually happens during the season, the offense and defense started slowly and then found their grooves and pulled away — beating Dallas 27-17.

Russell Wilson and the offense were out of sync early — missing a few pass plays, running inconsistently, having snap issues, committing penalties. And Darrell Bevell didn’t help by calling a couple of his favorite bubble screens — Doug Baldwin gained three yards total on both plays.

But the offense did finally get on the board for the first time this preseason — Wilson hitting Paul Richardson on a short touchdown pass after they had secured a field goal in the first half and then finding Tyler Lockett on a scramble play in the third quarter.

CHAWK LINES -- Training camp new

With training camp starting in one week, let’s look at some pre-camp player reports:

Michael Bennett is griping about his contract yet again. But don’t believe him when he says, “Just get rid of me.”

Russell Wilson, who now looks almost as hulked up as Robert Turbin, told Q13 Fox: “We’ll try to bring back Super Bowl 51 if we can. We’ll do everything we can, every day. That’s a promise.”

Justin Britt’s switch to center is one of the major camp stories to watch.

Pete Carroll reminds us why the Seahawks think J’Marcus Webb will succeed with them.

Can Thomas Rawls take over for Marshawn Lynch — even if he doesn’t play in the preseason?

John Clayton projects Rawls to get 16-17 carries a game, with the other backs getting six or seven.

Christine Michael — among those trying to replace Lynch — admits, “I was just being a young guy, just being a knucklehead.”

Like last year, all eyes will be on Jimmy Graham — from camp through the season.
