Hawks-Packers packed with drama since 1999

Seahawks at Packers helmetsAs the Seahawks prepare to travel to Green Bay for the first time since 2009 — and the first time under Pete Carroll — the Packers are itching for revenge.

They won’t tell you that; but, after their 2014 season started and ended with embarrassing losses to the Seahawks — one by blowout and the other via historic comeback/meltdown — of course they want retribution.

It’s just the latest dramatic meeting between the two franchises, which have been deeply intertwined since 1999.

This will be the first in-season trip back to Green Bay for John Schneider since he left the Packers to become Seattle’s GM in 2010. It also will be besieged OC Darrell Bevell’s first game back in his home state since he was coaching the Vikings in 2010. It also will mark the return of one-time Wisconsin star Russell Wilson.

Newer Seahawks fans — and there are plenty of them — might think the Packers-Seahawks series consists of three games: the Hawks’ infamous Fail Mary victory on a Monday night in 2012, Seattle’s 20-point win in the opening game of last season and Seattle’s miracle comeback in a 28-22 overtime win in the NFC title game.

But this series was full of great matchups back when Mike Holmgren and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck were leading the Hawks against their old team — led by Brett Favre — and this will be the 12th meeting since 1999.

What if Wilson leaves?

Wilson HBO clipWe fully expect Russell Wilson to be the Seahawks’ quarterback for at least the next three seasons, but there is plenty of speculation — including by him — that he might not be in Seattle for much longer.

On Monday, he told a North Carolina radio show that he hopes to stay in Seattle, “but I’ve also gone through ups and downs and been moved around before.”

He later tweeted:

Those comments add to a growing chorus that already is singing Wilson’s swan song in Seattle — whether it’s 2016, 2017 or 2018.

Would the Seahawks draft a QB in the third?

NFL draftDRAFT COUNTDOWN: Two weeks. A weekly look at draft-related topics involving the Seahawks.

Three years ago, the Seahawks surprised everyone with their third-round pick, selecting an undersized quarterback even though they had just signed a presumptive new starter.

As it turned out, the rookie, Russell Wilson, beat out the favorite, Matt Flynn, and then helped lead the Seahawks to consecutive Super Bowls.

The Seahawks clearly expect to sign Wilson to an extension and have him be their quarterback for the next decade, but it would not be a surprise if the Hawks used another third-round pick (or a fourth) on a QB this year.

CHAWK LINES -- Week in review

The Seahawks are already snooping around pre-released free agents. Ricky Jean Francois got everyone excited, but then he signed with Scot McCloughan — the man who drafted him in San Francisco.

There are a bunch of veteran defensive linemen already available, and we agree with Danny Kelly: The Seahawks are likely to explore that market closely.

Earl Thomas had his torn labrum repaired, and Tharold Simon apparently had shoulder surgery this week as well.
