Carroll, Wilson won’t talk trade yet, but their words say enough

Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson don’t want to talk about the likelihood that the quarterback will be traded in two months, but Wilson’s words make it pretty clear that is a strong possibility and Carroll did not deny it even as he tried to downplay it.

Wilson keeps saying he “hopes” to stay in Seattle, but why would he say that when he controls his destiny? If he plans to decline any trade, he should simply say, “I am staying.”

So, when he says he “hopes” to be back, it means he either has conditions in mind or is simply lying. But what conditions? Wilson’s poor play (before and after the finger injury) is the main reason the Seahawks underachieved more than perhaps any club in franchise history. Any complaints he might have about the roster around him can be turned back on him twofold.

What other roster moves need to be made?

The Seahawks’ confounding season continues to spiral to a terrible end, and with every bad loss it becomes more and more clear that a HUGE change must come in 2022.

We already have gone into detail about why we think Pete Carroll and John Schneider will be back and why Russell Wilson needs to go. We still think that is the way it will happen. But, with the Hawks wallowing at an unbelievable 5-10 after a horrendous last-minute home loss to Chicago, it’s a good time to see what else needs to occur.

As Bears arrive, time for more trade talk

As the Chicago Bears come to town for the first of three meaningless games for Seattle, Russell Wilson trade talk is heating up again.

It’s an apropos topic considering the Bears did their best to try to pry Wilson from Seattle last offseason, offering a combination of players and picks that included three first-rounders. John Schneider seemingly was willing to take it, but Pete Carroll said no.

Now, as the Bears come to Seattle and Wilson comes off another terrible performance against the Rams, his future is again front and center. (And it will be until he is traded, which we assume will happen next March.)

Adams & Wilson are still the focus of all of Seattle’s drama

The dysfunction and discontent surrounding the Seahawks will remain the story for the rest of the season (unless they make a miracle run to the Super Bowl), and two pieces of news have fed it this week.

First was Jamal Adams’ season-ending surgery, which put the red spotlight back on Seattle’s desperate move to get Adams last year as Pete Carroll and John Schneider tried to find an impact defender. Then came a report that Russell Wilson may be amenable to expanding his trade options to include the New York Giants and Denver Broncos.

What if Carroll does get fired or retire?

Jody Allen fired the Portland Trail Blazers’ longtime general manager Friday, leading some to speculate she might do the same with the Seahawks’ coach and/or GM after this season.

But Neil Olshey was fired for violating the Blazers’ code of conduct, not because the team may miss the playoffs for the first time in nine years. So, it seems quite unlikely Allen would fire Pete Carroll and John Schneider after one losing season, especially when she just extended both of them and neither has any personal black clouds hanging over his head.

But let’s play “What If” anyway.

Time to start shopping Wilson, who has hit his ceiling in Seattle

The Seahawks’ season is over. With six games left.

We haven’t said that this early in a season since 2008, when Mike Holmgren’s final squad was stuck on two wins all the way until Week 14 and ended up 4-12. (Jim Mora’s pitiful 2009 band was 4-7 before collapsing to 5-11.)

The Hawks (3-8) have a minuscule shot at the playoffs if they could get to nine wins, but they certainly are not going to win six straight with this quarterback, who showed his ineptitude again Monday in a 17-15 loss at Washington.

So, it’s time to get ready for big change in the offseason.

Schneider on Adams contract: ‘We’re glad to get it done’

Not counting gameday radio quick-hitters, you can count on three or four fingers the number of times a year John Schneider speaks publicly: At the Combine, the week before the draft and right after the draft.

Rich Eisen added another interview today and got a little from Schneider on the Jamal Adams deal, Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson and more.

Cap-wary Hawks using option bonuses for 2022

The Seahawks reportedly used a cap mechanism for Jamal Adams that they used for Tyler Lockett earlier this year and we were going to suggest they use for Duane Brown: The option bonus.

With so much uncertainty over the 2022 cap and the Seahawks needing to plot for two or three more big extensions, the option bonus is the way to go.

Lockett got a $13 million option bonus, and Adams reportedly has a $12.44 million option bonus that pairs with a $2 million salary in 2022. That will keep his cap number at $9.11 million (instead of something over $16 million).

Wilson is right: Hawks need to pay Brown

“We’ve got to figure that out because we need Duane Brown.” – Russell Wilson  

It sounds like the Seahawks have made their final offer to Jamal Adams and are now just waiting for him to decide whether he wants to play for them again. So the focus shifts to Duane Brown.

The Seahawks need to heed Russell Wilson’s words and pay the star left tackle.
