EDITOR’S NOTE: This is part of our draft preview, broken out into several posts for easier digestion.
John Schneider has made it clear he wants to move down from 32.
The last time the Seahawks drafted 32nd, back in 2014, they dangled a quarterback (Teddy Bridgewater) as bait to trade down. They could do the same thing this time.
Alabama’s Ty Simpson, the No. 2 QB in the draft, is considered a borderline first-round pick.
An NFL personnel guy told Jonathan Jones of CBS: “In a typical year I think you could get (Simpson) in the second, but this year I think if you want him you’d better be willing to take him in the late first or he could be gone.”
Adam Schefter said the two teams that seem to be most interested in Simpson are the Jets and Cardinals.
Albert Breer said, “There is a growing perception that Arizona could be eyeing Alabama QB Ty Simpson at 34. Or that they could even move ahead of the Jets, who are at 33, and into the bottom of the first round to get him.”
Schneider reiterated that the Seahawks have no issue trading within the division (they have done it before). If they dropped to Arizona’s spot at 34, they likely would net pick 143.
Tennessee (35) is rumored to be a team the Hawks have talked trade with already. That would net pick 142.
More trades in Round 2?
Based on the consensus board, the Seahawks probably could get a guy they really like as far down as 50. So we could see them making another move down.
They probably would have offers from teams angling to get their specific targets high in the second round.
Miami would be a good team to try to make a deal with – the Dolphins have five Day 2 picks (after two first-rounders) and will be able to move wherever they want on the board. The Hawks might be able to drop from 34 to 43 and pick up 94.
However they do it, the Seahawks seem likely to try to add a pick in the late third/early fourth via a couple of moves down from 32.
