Richard Sherman is recovering from another Achilles surgery but expected to be ready for training camp, Chris Carson and George Fant are both on pace to return healthy and there are no new updates on Kam Chancellor, Cliff Avril or Malik McDowell.
Those were the major injury updates from Pete Carroll at the Combine today.
Sherman had surgery on his other Achilles recently, but he is expected to be ready to run in April or May and be ready to go for training camp.
“He’s had a seemingly great process up until now,” Carroll said. “It’s a bit of a setback for a couple of weeks now because he is in the boot on the other foot, but he is not slowing down; he is working like crazy. He is having a fantastic offseason; his mentality is good. He’s competing like crazy right now.”
The second surgery likely kills any real opportunity for a trade — unless the Patriots or Dolphins are willing to pony up a second-rounder on the notion that the 30-year-old corner will return to Pro Bowl form. Carroll said John Schneider is “doing all the talking” with teams about potential trades but there was “nothing specific.”
Meanwhile, Carson and Fant are both expected to be ready for camp. Carroll said Fant is “having a great offseason” and aiming to be back by training camp.
“There’s a chance for that,” the coach said. “That’s what he’s shooting for. … We won’t rush him at all. He’s got a great future ahead of him and we’re excited about his development.”
A lot of us think Fant could move to right tackle, but Carroll wouldn’t publicly assign a position for Fant and said Germain Ifedi remains at right tackle for now. That could well change though.
“We’ll just see where that fits together,” Carroll said. “Can’t tell you that right now.”
Carroll said he loved everything Carson did before he suffered a broken ankle in Week 4 last season, and he is looking forward to fitting him back in. He should be ready for camp.
“He has a spot in our backfield, and we’re looking forward to him making a big impact this season,” Carroll said. Carson and C.J. Prosise are the only running backs under contract, but the team is expected to bring back Mike Davis and J.D. McKissic and add another runner (veteran or rookie).
As for Chancellor and Avril, Carroll said they are still recovering and waiting on doctors’ evaluations. He didn’t rule out their return — but both seem like long shots.
“Those guys are still in process,” Carroll said, “and we are waiting for the word where they have their stations along the way where they check in with the docs and all that. Really holding out hope that things work out.”
As for McDowell, Carroll almost sounded like he has moved on: “He’s got a process he’s going through. We get information rarely, in his case. But there will be some time (when) we’ll hear more.”
Earlier this week, we pointed out that McDowell has been working out but does not look even close to ready to play NFL football.
Hopefully, Mike Solari will set PC straight re Ifedi. GI may have the body of a tackle, but he has the feet of a guard.
