Chancellor wants $4M moved to 2016, says sides are $900K apart

In his first public comments since he started his holdout 40 days ago, Kam Chancellor told NFL Network’s Dan Hellie it could be over by now and the sides are $900,000 apart.

Chancellor said he is not asking for more money but wants $4 million moved from 2017 to 2016, Hellie told 710 ESPN. That would bump his 2016 salary from $5.1 million to $9.1 million. He is due $6.8 million in 2017.

Chancellor, 27, also said he didn’t want to wait until he was almost 30 to rework his contract.

If the sides are indeed $900,000 apart on a $4 million request, it means the Hawks have offered to move $3.1 million forward to 2016.

Fred Jackson signed his contract on Sunday.

Seattle’s practice squad includes two SeaDawgs and two former draft picks.

The Seahawks probably were at least mildly disappointed to lose Ronald Martin and Obum Gwacham to other teams — although they always might have a chance to get them back.

Sherman Smith recently explained why Christine Michael frustrated Seattle coaches so much.

Will Blackmon is adhering to Pete Carroll’s “Always Compete” mantra …

No change between the Seahawks and Kam Chancellor.

Many teams, including the New York Giants, have called, but the Hawks are not entertaining trade offers.

Chancellor might seek a trade, but the Hawks have not given him permission to talk to other teams about a contract.

Warren Moon apparently does not agree with Chancellor’s holdout.

Some bleeding-heart fan started a petition to get Chancellor back.

No surprise: Evan Mathis reportedly left Seattle without a contract Saturday.

But, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports, he didn’t close the door on his way out.

All indications are G Evan Mathis had a good visit with the Seahawks today. They’ll remain an option for him.

Mathis, a Pro Bowl guard cut by the Philadelphia Eagles in June, reportedly has been holding out for at least $5 million a year. The Hawks can’t really afford that. But they might be able to give him around $3.5 million, if they moved some things around.

Some observations from the final official day of camp from those who were there (and other features):

Former Seahawk Marcus Trufant skydived into camp before practice.

Jermaine Kearse needed a good camp to stave off challenges from among the deepest receiving corps the Hawks have had under Pete Carroll, and he apparently continues to impress.

Kevin Smith has had a good camp and played well vs. Denver, but will it be enough to beat out Ricardo Lockette or B.J. Daniels?

Russell Wilson says he is clicking with all of his receivers and he is not concerned about the offensive line.

Hawk Blogger says the starting line looks fine with Justin Britt at left guard and Garry Gilliam at right tackle. But he also asks what we all are wondering: What happened to Alvin Bailey?

The P-I offered five takeaways from camp.

Richard Sherman supports Tom Brady in his appeal of his four-game suspension.

Darrell Bevell told Peter King he wouldn’t change the Super Bowl play call but it “will always be there to drive me.”

In secondary, even replacements are hurt

Just over two weeks into camp, the Seahawks have even fewer cornerbacks than they started with — as impossible as that might seem.

They were so thin at the position in the first 10 days that they traded for Mohammed Seisay and converted Doug McNeil from wide receiver. And now those guys are hurt — Seisay with a groin and McNeil with an ankle, joining Richard Sherman (hip), Will Blackmon (groin), Jeremy Lane (ACL, arm) and Tharold Simon (shoulder).

With only Cary Williams, Marcus Burley, Tye Smith and Triston Wade healthy, the Hawks needed some bodies at the position, so they added two guys just to get through practice.

“We need legs at corner right now, so we’ll give these guys a chance,” Pete Carroll said of Jeremy Crayton and Keelan Johnson. “We’re a little bit behind with Sherm not being able to make it back and Will not making it back right away and Seisay gone, too, so we just need them for legs right now. But they’ll get a chance. They got tested today pretty good.”

First game is about Baby Boomers & Jesse Williams

The Legion of Boom’s three key members played in the Super Bowl despite being about 50 percent healthy.

To illustrate just how little the first preseason game means in comparison, none of them will be on hand Friday.

Safeties Earl Thomas (shoulder) and Kam Chancellor (holdout) have not been available to practice all camp so far, and now Richard Sherman has a hip problem that will keep him out against the Denver Broncos.

“Sherman’s got a little bit of irritation in the hip flexor area,” Pete Carroll said Thursday, “so we’re going to tend to that and take care of that and make sure he’s right for the long haul.”

Top nickel corner Will Blackmon also is not expected to play.

“Will’s got a groin thing that is bothering him a little bit,” Carroll said. “Real slight, but again those are the kinds of decisions we’ll probably make in favor of holding him out.”

With Tharold Simon and Jeremy Lane both recovering from surgeries, that means Marcus Burley, rookie Tye Smith, trade acquisition Mohammed Seisay and receiver convert Doug McNeil all will see time opposite and in place of new right corner Cary Williams.

Call it the Legion of Baby Boomers.

Wagner is worth $9M to league’s No. 1 defense

When Bobby Wagner signs his new contract — and it appears that could be in time for training camp next week — every offense that has to face the Seahawks’ defense for the next three seasons is going to shed a few more tears.

You would too if you knew the No. 1 defense of the last three years likely will remain that way for the next three — with Wagner, Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, K.J. Wright and Cliff Avril (and maybe Michael Bennett) all under contract. That’s seven starters signed through at least 2017. Marshawn Lynch went Beast Mode during a kickball game at his community barbecue in Oakland.

Lynch’s biopic has been canceled because it is “terrible.” If you care to know more, Field Gulls interviewed the director.

In the TMI department, Russell Wilson told a San Diego church that he and Ciara are abstaining from sex. And he joked that he needs everyone to pray for them.

In that same interview, Wilson said God challenged him to respond immediately after he threw the interception in the Super Bowl. A lot of people criticized him for claiming that God spoke to him, but take it with a grain of salt: People feel their faith in different ways. Some people used to rip Steve Largent for his strong faith in God as well. Leave ’em alone.

Meanwhile, Richard Sherman took a lot of flak for inviting woman-beating boxer Floyd Mayweather to his charity softball game. (Maybe Sherman doesn’t realize Mayweather is nearly as much of a scumbag as convicted rapist Mike Tyson.)

‘This is a team that’s built for the future’

“This is a team that’s built for the future. … We’re in the middle of this. This is not like the end. This is just the middle of this.” — Pete Carroll to 710 ESPN after blowing the Super Bowl in February.

The Seahawks’ contract impasse with Russell Wilson has many wondering how much longer he will be the team’s quarterback and, in a related consideration, how long the Hawks’ Super Bowl window will remain open.

But Pete Carroll’s comments from February remain just as germane today, despite the apparent lack of progress on Wilson’s deal: This team is right in the middle of its Super Bowl window.

The team controls Wilson’s contract for at least three more seasons, which happens to match the duration of the deals of some of the team’s best players: Marshawn Lynch, Jimmy Graham, Kam Chancellor, Michael Bennett. Signed through 2018 are Cliff Avril, K.J. Wright, Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman.

Sure, Lynch could walk at any time if he feels the Call of Duty to do something else. And Bennett might not be with the team beyond this year if he continues to sit inside the VMAC whining about his contract while his teammates practice.

But, with the team now talking to Bobby Wagner about a new deal, we should be able to add the linebacker to the list of long-term Seahawks at some point this year.

Add the team’s young receivers (Paul Richardson, Tyler Lockett, Kevin Norwood) and some of the other additions from the last two drafts, and the Hawks have a solid core through at least 2017.

Tom Cable says four guys are competing at center — the position “that certainly has the most uncertainty.”

Among the Seattle Times’ impressions from Tuesday, Tyler Lockett and the players’ overall speed impressed special teams coach Brian Schneider.

Derrick Coleman says this special-teams group is the best the Hawks have had since he has been there.

Richard Sherman had a couple of great retorts for his critics on Tuesday.

Cary Williams explains why he prefers Pete Carroll’s Seahawks to Chip Kelly’s Eagles.

Anthony McCoy reminded everyone he is still around and has the talent to make the team after missing the past two seasons with Achilles injuries.

Marshawn Lynch is putting a little Beast Mode into “Call of Duty.” Lynch said, “I’ve been in the Super Bowl, movies, music videos, Madden. But to have your own character in Duty is, I mean, it’s almost like you arrived.”
