A look back at Hawks’ most inefficient ‘long’ drive of the season

Cooper vs Carolina — Cooper Helfet can’t quite get back to a pass thrown short of him at the 5-yard line in the third quarter at Carolina.

The Seattle offense was a total tease against Carolina, with two of its most time-consuming drives of the season ending in disappointment.

Bad enough was the 13-play drive at the end of the first half that ended in an interception off the hands of Marshawn Lynch. The 13 plays tied for the most in a Seattle drive this season.

But even worse — and more mindboggling — than that was the bizarre drive to start the third quarter, right after Marcus Burley had intercepted a pass by Cam Newton.

How does a team manage to hold the ball for six minutes and 12 plays and gain just 29 yards? With a very entertaining combination of good and bad plays.

The Seahawks have been raving about Ricardo Lockette all year, and now everyone is seeing why.

Back in minicamps, offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell often tossed Lockette’s name out as someone the coaches were excited about — particularly because of his sub-4.3 speed. That’s why it was easy to see the fourth-year player making the team again despite a huge logjam at wide receiver.

As the fourth or even fifth receiver, he doesn’t get many offensive opportunities — yet he has caught touchdown passes in both victories this season. Add to that his standout play on special teams and you have the kind of player the Seahawks love — fast and versatile.

He showed it all in the win over Denver on Sunday.

Receiver Ricardo Lockette has been a hot topic this week. “He’s come so far from where he was,” offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell says in features from Curtis Crabtree and Clare Farnsworth. And here’s audio of Lockette on 710 ESPN.

Rookie wide receiver Kevin Norwood is “really competing to get on the game-day roster,” per a report by Crabtree.

Darrell Bevell tells Peter King of MMQB about Russell Wilson’s zone read option pass to Ricardo Lockette that ended in a 33-yard touchdown.

The Packers cut the field in half when they decided not to throw Richard Sherman’s way.

The Seahawks missed 12 tackles, more than they whiffed on in any game last season, per Pro Football Focus. Kam Chancellor had 11 tackles, but he also missed three. Pete Carroll said on 710 KIRO today, “Kam Chancellor was just banging folks. He was hitting them. He might’ve missed the strike zone a few times.”

As for Earl Thomas’ poor decisions not to make fair catches, Carroll said, “We will keep working on it to get better.” Thomas did not seem to think he did anything wrong: “I can’t control what happened.”

For those not at the game, here’s a look at the Seahawks’ tribute to their three homegrown Hall of Famers — Steve Largent, Cortez Kennedy and Walter Jones. They also raised the 12th Man flag together before the game. Pretty cool.
