Hawks’ playoff scenarios

Playoff scenarioUnlike last season, when the Seahawks were 9-1 at this point and pretty much assured of a playoff spot, they are fighting for their playoff lives as they enter a brutal six-week stretch to finish the season.

Some think the Hawks are in must-win mode the rest of the way, starting vs. Arizona, but the fact is they need just five wins in the final six games to make the playoffs. And they could make it with a 4-2 finish if other teams scuffle toward the end.

The Seahawks have a steep upward climb to catch Arizona for the NFC West title, trailing by three games and facing the toughest remaining slate in the NFL: Arizona (9-1), at San Francisco (6-4), at Philadelphia (7-3), vs. San Fran, at Arizona, vs. St. Louis (4-6).

Just to make the playoffs, the Hawks almost certainly will have to sweep either Arizona and/or San Francisco, plus win the finale at home vs. the Rams. Basically, they need to go at least 4-1 in their division games and perhaps win in Philly.

1% chance to win Super Bowl? Why the Hawks can buck those odds

As disappointing as the last two weeks have been for the Seahawks and their fans — two tough losses, lots of injuries and the shocking trade of Percy Harvin — there’s still plenty of time for the Seahawks to overcome their 3-3 start and turn into the Super Bowl team everyone expected them to be.

History apparently says the Hawks have a 38 percent chance of making the playoffs and just a 1 percent chance of winning the Super Bowl. But nobody makes the playoffs or wins the Super Bowl in October.

Among the reasons to be confident:

Chawk lines opponents

The Seahawks are off this weekend, but most of their remaining opponents play. The Hawks run through a three-week gauntlet starting Thanksgiving night in which they face the 49ers twice and the Eagles in between. The Eagles are at the 49ers on Sunday.

After the Hawks play the Redskins on “Monday Night Football” next week, they host the Cowboys. Dallas plays New Orleans on Sunday night.

Field Gulls breaks down the viewing opportunities.

The Eagles (3-0) have rallied from 10-point deficits in every game so far, and the 49ers (1-2) have yet to score in the fourth quarter as they have blown leads in both losses.

The Cowboys are dealing with a mutiny by cornerback Morris Claiborne (yeah, another LSU chump) as Drew Brees comes to town ready to dominate them again.

Some more thoughts on the Redskins’ meltdown vs. the New York Giants (the Hawks host the Giants in Week 10) …

“This was a total team debacle. And total domination by the Giants in all phases,” Washington coach Jay Gruden said.

Kirk Cousins is a fast starter who tends to fall apart, according to this analysis of what went wrong Thursday.

Injuries are killing Seattle’s opponents

Chargers HardwickThe first week of the NFL season was riddled with key injuries for many teams, and the attrition affected many of Seattle’s opponents.

We detailed before the season all of the injuries and suspensions that already will affect many of the Seahawks’ 13 foes this season, and the hits just keep on coming.

For the second straight week, the Hawks will go against a backup center as San Diego lost longtime pivot Nick Hardwick for the season due to a nerve issue in his neck. His backup is Rich Ohrnberger, who stepped in against Arizona in San Diego’s 18-17 loss on Monday.

In the Seahawks’ opener, Green Bay started rookie center Corey Linsley in place of injured starter JC Tretter.

An even bigger loss Wednesday came in St. Louis, where the Rams learned they could be without star defensive end Chris Long for 8-10 weeks due to ankle surgery.  The Seahawks play at St. Louis in Week 7 and Week 17.

Seahawks’ schedule keeps getting easier

WelkerThe Seahawks’ schedule just keeps getting easier.

The news that Denver receiver Wes Welker will be suspended for four games, thus missing the Broncos’ game in Seattle in Week 3, is just the latest blow to a Seattle opponent.

While the Hawks appeared to get better at nearly every spot this year, many of their opponents lost key players.

We took a look at the Seahawks’ schedule when it was released in April and projected another 13-3 record. Let’s see what has changed since then:
