With Unger in question, Hawks add backup center

The Seahawks signed center Patrick Lewis on Wednesday as insurance in case starter Max Unger cannot play Sunday vs. Dallas.

Unger suffered a foot injury — coach Pete Carroll called it a strain — against Washington on Monday and apparently is questionable for Sunday’s game. Unger reportedly was wearing a walking boot after the game.

With Lemuel Jeanpierre on injured reserve, Stephen Schilling would start at center if Unger cannot play.

How much will the Hawks miss Miller?

Seattle Seahawks v Buffalo BillsEarlier this year, there was a chance Zach Miller would not be with the Seahawks. But he took a pay cut to stay, and Seattle did not have to find out how the absence of the multi-faceted tight end would affect the offense.

Well, now they will have to find out.

The Seahawks — while banged up in the secondary — had not experienced any front-line losses so far this season. But they joined the rest of the battered NFL when they lost Miller for several weeks due to ankle surgery.

While Kam Chancellor found a way to play through his bone spurs, Miller apparently could not.

Bye comes at perfect time for Okung & Chancellor

Kam Chancellor during the fourth quarter against Denver (Getty)The Seahawks dodged a couple of injury bullets against Denver and have to hope they are not issues that linger and become big problems later in the season.

Left tackle Russell Okung returned despite suffering a shoulder injury and strong safety Kam Chancellor played with bone spurs in an ankle — playing so well that he garnered NFC defensive player of the week honors.

For both Okung and Chancellor, the bye comes at the perfect time. And Seahawks fans have to hope they can tough it through the season.

Injuries have messed with both players during their short careers.

Report: Chancellor considered surgery

Kam Chancellor during the fourth quarter against Denver (Getty)Kam Chancellor reportedly considered having ankle surgery to remove bone spurs this week after suffering through a tough game in San Diego, but he felt much better last week, played very well against Denver and apparently has decided — at least for now — not to have surgery.

A source told FOX Sports that the strong safety was contemplating having surgery this week as the Hawks begin their bye period. That might have put him out for 6-8 weeks.

But the ankle felt much better during the week and he had no problems in the game, which was his best of the season (nine tackles, two passes defensed, an interception and an assist on a forced fumble).

Other than Irvin’s brain cramp, Seahawks are pretty healthy

Marshawn Lynch, Kam Chancellor and Zach Miller all practiced Friday and are expected to play Sunday against the Denver Broncos, coach Pete Carroll said.

Bruce Irvin, however, will be a game-time decision. Apparently he injured his hip in practice Wednesday. (That’s on top of the brain cramp he suffered against the Chargers — i.e., late hit on Philip Rivers that helped them score a touchdown. Irvin was fined $8,200 by the NFL for the shove and is appealing.)

Lynch’s back issues flared up again last Sunday and he sat out practice Wednesday, as he often does anyway. It would have been a surprise if he couldn’t play Sunday.

Injuries are killing Seattle’s opponents

Chargers HardwickThe first week of the NFL season was riddled with key injuries for many teams, and the attrition affected many of Seattle’s opponents.

We detailed before the season all of the injuries and suspensions that already will affect many of the Seahawks’ 13 foes this season, and the hits just keep on coming.

For the second straight week, the Hawks will go against a backup center as San Diego lost longtime pivot Nick Hardwick for the season due to a nerve issue in his neck. His backup is Rich Ohrnberger, who stepped in against Arizona in San Diego’s 18-17 loss on Monday.

In the Seahawks’ opener, Green Bay started rookie center Corey Linsley in place of injured starter JC Tretter.

An even bigger loss Wednesday came in St. Louis, where the Rams learned they could be without star defensive end Chris Long for 8-10 weeks due to ankle surgery.  The Seahawks play at St. Louis in Week 7 and Week 17.

Lane hits short-term IR, Hawks work out five CBs

Jeremy LaneThe Seahawks have placed cornerback Jeremy Lane on injured reserve, designating him for return, which means he will be out at least eight weeks with the groin injury he aggravated in the season opener last Thursday.

The Seahawks have begun a search for his replacement, reportedly working out undrafted rookie Keith Lewis and fourth-year player Mike Harris among five cornerbacks on Monday.

The Seahawks also announced the signing of offensive lineman Andrew McDonald, who has a unique tale, and a couple of practice squad moves.

Injury report: Simon will have minor knee surgery

Cornerback Tharold Simon will have minor knee surgery this week and seems likely to miss the first month of the season.

Coach Pete Carroll called the problem “minimal” but said now is the time to do it. The Seahawks have a bye in Week 4.

“He’s got real minor stuff to get done,” Carroll said. “We’ve got to get some things cleaned up. We’re going to try to do this really quickly.”

Assuming this is arthroscopic surgery, it typically requires 2-4 weeks of recovery time.

Will injuries back Seahawks into a corner?

As the Seahawks continued to shuffle their roster ahead of the season opener, bringing back wide receiver/kick returner Bryan Walters and releasing receiver Phil Bates, the bigger news seems to be the question surrounding backup cornerbacks Jeremy Lane and Tharold Simon.

Jeremy Lane runs with Steven Terrell in practice Monday (Seahawks.com)Lane (hamstring) and Simon (knee) missed the last preseason game, and their absence was so notable that the Hawks traded for cornerback Marcus Burley on Sunday rather than keep Phillips Adams or Akeem Auguste.

The Seahawks could face a deficit in the slot against Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay’s prolific passing attack on Thursday. Burley and/or Deshawn Shead will be counted on if Lane and Simon cannot play. Lane practiced on a limited basis Monday and Simon was out.
