It’s Seahawks vs. Patriots Redux. There are tons of great storylines. Let’s check them out …

Sam Darnold is getting all kinds of well-deserved kudos for how he has rebounded from terrible situations in his first five seasons. Christian McCaffrey was teammates with him both in Carolina and San Francisco and calls him “one of my best friends and also an incredible player.” Josh Allen doesn’t usually watch the Super Bowl, but he will Sunday because he and Darnold (fellow 2018 first-round picks) are very good friends.

Why we were confident Macdonald would lead Hawks to Super Bowl

After last season, we said in multiple forums that Mike Macdonald is going to win a Super Bowl within the next three years.

We didn’t necessarily expect it to be this season — we thought this would be more like the 2012 ramp-up year. But the Seahawks won another shootout against the Rams, 31-27, in the NFC title game and Macdonald is now poised to fulfill our prediction even earlier than we really thought he would.

So why were we so confident? How did we know Macdonald had what it took to bring another championship to Seattle?

Reaction, stats, highlights from Seattle’s NFC title win vs. the Rams

The Seahawks are back in the Super Bowl after a rousing 31-27 win over the Rams in the NFC title game.

With his defense struggling to contain the Rams for much of the game, Sam Darnold led Seattle with 346 passing yards, three touchdowns (all under pressure) and no interceptions. It was a spectacular performance that silenced any remaining Darnold doubters.

The analysis of the game is still ongoing two days later, and we finally have time to post the CHawk Talk — what everyone is saying about Seattle’s big win.

Here are some of the many highlights from NFL Twitter.

Bad news for Rams: Hawks are a more complete team now

It will be Rams-Seahawks Part III for the Super Bowl — and it might end up like 49ers-Hawks Part III.

In Rams-Hawks Part I, Sam Darnold threw four picks and the Hawks lost by two points. In Part II, the defense got shredded and the Hawks had to rally from 16 down to win 38-37 in overtime. That’s a terrible performance on each side of the ball to make these tight games.

It will not be a surprise if Part III is not close – not 41-6, but maybe something like 34-17. Seattle’s offense and defense are not going to give the Rams anything, not like they did in the first two games. The Rams, who struggled to beat Carolina and Chicago, should see the best version of the Hawks, just as the 49ers did. If they do, the Rams might not have a chance.

Reaction to Seattle’s 41-6 demolition of the 49ers

Dropping some notable Twitter posts after the big divisional playoff win over the 49ers on Saturday night …

It’s time for Darnold to stand up and get his first playoff win

As Sam Darnold and the Seahawks prepare for the rematch Darnold predicted was coming, everyone is wondering whether he and the offense will snap out of the slow-start funk that has plagued them for the past couple of months.

Everyone is wondering how many interceptions he might throw against the 49ers – and how many times the defense might have to bail him and his side out.

He is seeking his first playoff win as a starter, and he needs to play up to the challenge – not force his defense to carry the entire day again.

“Sam’s a great quarterback, a Pro Bowler, and he’s going to play his best football now,” AJ Barner said. “He’s already starting to do that. We’re extremely confident in him and the offensive group as a collective. We’re going to start playing our best football.”

Offensive fade is not all Darnold’s fault

The Seahawks have scuffled along on offense for most of their six-game winning streak, scoring just two first-half touchdowns and ranking 29th in EPA per play.

In their 27-10 win at Carolina last Sunday, it was more of the same — another slow start followed by a second-half surge sparked by defense (in some games, it has been special teams).

A lot of people are continually putting the blame for the offensive struggles on Sam Darnold — partially because he continues to turn the ball over a couple times a game (he had a fumble and interception vs. Carolina).

But most of the blame belongs where we always thought it would: on the offensive line. And Klint Kubiak has not done enough — either with his opening play scripts or his other play calls — to help Darnold.

Macdonald on historic comeback: ‘Great teams figure out a way to win’

Mike Macdonald knows he has a great football team because it can beat any team in any style of game.

And the Seahawks are so resilient that they can give up a franchise-record 581 yards, go minus-3 in turnover margin, trail by 16 midway through the fourth quarter and still rally to beat the “other best team” in the NFL with a two-point conversion in overtime.

That’s what the Hawks did to the Rams in a wild 38-37 comeback that (a) clinched a playoff spot, (b) gave the Hawks control of the No. 1 seed and (c) got the Big Game Monkey off Sam Darnold’s back.

Macdonald said he was “really, really proud” of his team for overcoming all of the negatives in the massive NFL battle royale.

“What a friggin’ football team you guys are,” he told his players afterward. “What a freaking football team, man! We’re the freaking Seahawks! Let’s go!”

Hawks barely survive Colts to make Rams rematch matter

“Games are going to be like this coming down the stretch. You’ve got to figure out ways to win them, and I’m proud that we did.” – Mike Macdonald, after the Seahawks beat the Colts 18-16 in the final seconds

Even with Old Man Rivers at quarterback, the Colts gave the Seahawks all they could handle Sunday – but the Hawks survived and are still in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

If the Hawks had embarrassingly lost to Philip Rivers (the newly unretired 44-year-old), their rematch against the Rams on Thursday would not have carried the same meaning. But it remains as big as they come — both teams tied atop the NFC at 11-3, with the winner taking the lead for the No. 1 seed. If the Hawks win, their odds of getting the bye and home field in the postseason will jump from 26% to 51%.

They are going to have to come to that game a lot more prepared than they were for the Colts. Shane Steichen outcoached Mike Macdonald in the first half, the defense seemed to be looking past Rivers to the Rams, and the offense continued its recent pattern of slow starts and its seasonlong trend of bad third-down play.

Macdonald told his team afterward: “We’re gonna have games like that coming down the stretch, OK? They can come in all shapes and sizes. All we gotta do is just go to the next play and figure out a way to win.”
