Hawks watching other teams’ early moves

The NFL year — i.e., free agency and the trading period — begins in four weeks, but the business of rebuilding teams already has begun as clubs re-sign and release players.

The Seahawks haven’t made any big moves yet — although Marshawn Lynch’s pending retirement will save them $6.5 million vs. the 2016 salary cap — but they surely are watching other teams’ transactions with great interest.

Recent contract extensions have established the markets for Michael Bennett (who is expected to push hard for a raise) and Bruce Irvin; a few teams have parted company with safeties, making them potential trade destinations for Kam Chancellor; and some veteran offensive linemen already have been released as well.

This offseason sets up Part III & wide-open 2017

While a lot of people think the Seahawks face a daunting offseason — with 24 scheduled free agents and decisions to make on Kam Chancellor and Michael Bennett — you can bet John Schneider and Pete Carroll see it for what it really is: A chance for them to reset their still-strong team for Part III of the Schneider/Carroll era so they can win a couple more Super Bowls.

Part I included the building years of 2010-12, when they put together a stout defense and powerful running attack and found a franchise quarterback. Part II (2013-15) was the first Super Bowl window, which did not turn out quite as well as it should have.

This offseason offers the chance for Schneider and Carroll to redefine their team — officially moving on from some 2010-15 stalwarts (e.g., Marshawn Lynch, Chancellor, Russell Okung) and remaking their offensive line. It will set the table for next offseason, when Schneider will have the flexibility to make some moves that could create a dominant team for 2017 and beyond.

SEAvsMIN Miss Universe After the Seahawks pulled off their second miracle playoff win in their past three postseason games, here are some quotes, stats and other tidbits:

First, some words from Pete Carroll to his team.

NFL vets Fred Jackson and Ahtyba Rubin won their first playoff game.

Russell Wilson gave the game ball to the 34-year-old Jackson, who spent nine non-playoff seasons in Buffalo.

Richard Sherman on the looming divisional matchup against Carolina: ““It’s always a fun one when you play Carolina. It’s going to be a physical game. … Both teams are going to hit each other in the mouth and we’ll see who is standing in the end.’’

CHAWK LINES, Playoffs: At Minnesota

Marshawn Lynch is back with the Seahawks and will practice Wednesday with an eye toward playing in Minnesota.

In other personnel updates, Pete Carroll said the Hawks could get back almost everyone who missed the last game or two — Kam Chancellor, Russell Okung, J.R. Sweezy, Luke Willson.

Bob Condotta takes a look at the NFC North champion Vikings.

The temperature is expected to be in the single digits. That would be the Seahawks’ coldest game ever.

Carroll said the Super Bowl (i.e., his mistake) lingered in players’ minds for too long this season.

Carroll also shared the story of his vision to Win Forever: It started in Buffalo, where he won his first game as a coach.

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Cardinals

The Seahawks return to the scene of the Super crime this week, back in Glendale, Ariz., and Russell Wilson revisited the most infamous interception in Super Bowl history.

Wilson credits his durability partly to swimming and advice from NFL veterans such as Vinny Testaverde and Leon Washington.

Mark Glowinski is No. 1 on Bob Condotta’s list of players to watch vs. Arizona.

The Seahawks will see an old friend, Red Bryant.

CHAWK LINES, Week 15: Cleveland

Russell Wilson and Doug Baldwin added two more TD connections, continuing their historic streak.

Pete Carroll said the Seahawks’ 182 rushing yards vs. Cleveland with new running backs were a “really good statement.”

Marshawn Lynch is in a “race against time” to see if he can play again this season, Carroll told 710 ESPN.

Appropriately, Ahtyba Rubin made the playoffs for the first time by beating his former team.

As fully expected, the Cardinals won the NFC West and the Seahawks will be a wild card.

Michael Bennett came out during pregame introductions wearing a Darth Vader mask.

CHAWK LINES, Week 14: At Baltimore

CHAWK LINES -- Seahawks at Ravens

Darrell Bevell said he is not pursuing the BYU job even though the school is interested in him. He said he is intent on helping the Seahawks reach a third straight Super Bowl.

Anthony McCoy is back with the Seahawks, replacing short-timer Chase Coffman.

Marshawn Lynch was back at VMAC on Wednesday, but Pete Carroll said Monday that Lynch is a “few weeks” away from being able to play. Sure sounds like Lynch could end up on IR.

Doug Baldwin is having his best statistical season and could end up as Seattle’s first 1,000-yard receiver since 2007.

CHAWK LINES, Week 13: At Minnesota

Pete Carroll told NFL Network this game in Minnesota will show whether the Seahawks really have turned the corner.

Can the Seahawks replicate the 1998 49ers, 2001 Patriots and 2011 Giants — all 6-5 teams that won the Super Bowl?

Despite throwing the fewest passes in the league, Russell Wilson is on pace for almost 4,000 yards.

Tom Cable said the offense is helping Wilson much more: “He’s a special quarterback, and when you do it right for him …”

Gregg Bell says the Seahawks’ offensive line has been the key to the Seahawks’ season “U-turn.”

The Seahawks hopefully learned a lesson from the failed Drew Nowak experiment.

Doug Baldwin leads NFL receivers over the last three weeks — perhaps inspired by Marshawn Lynch’s comment that the offense had looked “unfamiliar.”

CHAWK LINES, State of the team, Week 12: Pittsburgh

Like 2012, Wilson is heating up

Wilson and Baldwin vs Steelers Seattle’s record-setting win over Pittsburgh is the latest evidence that this season is shaping up a lot like 2012.

That year, Russell Wilson’s first, the offense did little to help through the first half of the season — relying on the defense to carry the way for the rookie quarterback. The unit held five of the first six opponents under 14 points, and Wilson did just enough to help keep the Hawks floating around .500.

But then things swung the other way around this time of the season, as the defense faltered and Wilson took over the offense and led the charge into the second round of the playoffs.

On Sunday, the defense gave up 538 yards to Pittsburgh and Wilson put together his most prolific passing day (345 yards and five touchdowns), and it looks like that 2012 pattern is repeating itself.
