We all know Sam Darnold is not going to play this week at Arizona. The bigger question is: How many games beyond this one will he miss?
NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Jay Glazer reported that the injury is actually to Darnold’s glute tendon, and Glazer said the Seahawks are still getting medical opinions to figure out what the healing time will be. Mike Florio added that a source told him Darnold could be out 4-6 weeks.
If it is a mild strain of the tendon, medical standards indicate the injury could require 2-4 weeks of rehabilitation. If it is moderate, it could be as long as eight weeks. It sounds like the Seahawks still are trying to figure it out. And, of course, everyone heals at a different rate. So 2-6 weeks seems like a realistic window.
The Hawks should win the next three to start 4-0, but then it gets tougher — especially if Darnold remains out.
Here is Seattle’s schedule for the next six weeks: at Arizona, at Washington, vs. L.A. Chargers, vs. San Francisco, at Denver, vs. Kansas City.
The first three look like very winnable games for the team with the best defense in the NFL. The Chargers put up a dud against Arizona on Sunday, losing 26-14. Washington lost to Philadelphia 24-22. The Seahawks obviously have a better defense than either the Cardinals or the Eagles.
The Hawks should open 4-0, with or without Darnold. Then comes a seemingly much tougher stretch against the 49ers, Broncos, Chiefs and Bears – the latter opened with 59 points against Carolina.
We certainly need to see more points from Drew Lock and company while Darnold is out – 13 won’t cut it every week. Lock played well enough vs. the Patriots, but his teammates made a lot of mistakes around him until later in the game, when they settled in and helped the defense pull out a 13-10 win. The offense should get a lot cleaner as guys get used to Lock, who now gets all of the prep time.
Meanwhile, the defense should get better, too. It was missing both Nick Emmanwori and Ty Okada in the opener, and Trevon Diggs did not play either (though the corners played very well without him).
Four games Sunday featured more than 60 points as the league had the highest-scoring opening Sunday since the NFL-AFL merger. That is a commentary on the state of defense around the league. The Seahawks quite obviously are bucking that trend, and that unit should help keep the team winning while Darnold is out.
