Hawks got it together and can keep it together after this season, too

Over the last three weeks, the
Seahawks’ defense has gone on a tear
unlike anything it has done under Pete Carroll and the Hawks have
re-established themselves as the Super Bowl repeat threat we all expected them to be.

Assuming the rejuvenated Seahawks maintain their dominant play and take it to the same conclusion as last year, the big question will become: How do they keep this going to create that dynasty we all projected?

Carroll admits Lynch’s contract is still an issue

Pete Carroll finally admitted that there is a disconnect
between Marshawn Lynch and the
Seahawks’ front
office and that it stems from the running back’s offseason contract dispute.

NFL.com continues to reiterate that the team will part ways with Lynch after this season, and Carroll did little to dispel that notion Monday on 710 ESPN.

Asked about his relationship with Lynch, Carroll said, “We’re working through it” — which sure seems like a euphemism for “we tolerate each other, but it’s not going to work past this
season.”

While it certainly is possible that Lynch returns in 2015, all signs seem to point the other direction.

Harvin trade gives Seahawks $12.8 million more next offseason

Percy Harvin’s contract was an albatross from the ill-advised moment the Seahawks decided to guarantee him $25.5 million in a deal that included salary cap hits north of $12 million from 2014 through 2017.

It seemed farfetched that he would last that long at those numbers; thanks to his alleged anti-team antics, the Hawks just ended up cutting ties much earlier than anyone thought they would.

Even though he will still count $7.2 million in proration in 2015, the Seahawks divested themselves of the remainder of his $11 million salary this season and his $10.5 million salary in 2015.

With the trade official, the Hawks are not paying his $647,000 salary this week, so they will recoup $7.1 million this season. Add that to their net savings of $5.7 million in 2015, and the Hawks pulled an extra $12.8 million in cap space for next offseason.

That gives the Hawks a lot of wiggle room to re-sign some of their key free agents, if they choose.

Have Hawks finally learned lesson about overpaying receivers?

Hopefully the Seahawks learned their lesson once and for all about overpaying for wide receivers.

Percy Harvin is the team’s fourth big-money bust at the position in the past decade, joining underperformers Deion Branch, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Sidney Rice. It was easy to see coming.

The Hawks paid $84 million to those four players — receiving just 116 games and 31 touchdowns in return. Talk about dropping the ball.

Only one Russell is going to get an extension

After this season, the Seahawks figure to give a contract extension to Russell.

Wilson. Not Okung.

While the quarterback has far exceeded expectations over his first two and a quarter seasons, the left tackle has largely been underwhelming since being drafted sixth overall in 2010.

Both are signed through 2015, which means next offseason is the key time for extensions. Wilson will get his, but it’s hard to see Okung getting one — especially if he continues to struggle like he did Monday night.

The left tackle was flagged for three penalties vs. Washington, including a false start on third down that helped stop a first-quarter drive and a holding on a third-quarter drive that also fizzled.

“I’ve got to play better,” he told The Seattle Times. “I can’t afford to have three penalties. Just a lack of focus. I take full responsibility for it. I can’t help out the line making mistakes like that.”

Lynch and Miller sure don’t look like they’re on the way out

The futures of Marshawn Lynch and Zach Miller were hotly debated all offseason, with many concluding that their salaries and age (both are 28) would preclude either from remaining with the Hawks beyond 2014 — or, in Miller’s case, even in 2014.

After their stellar play in the season opener last week, though, it is easy to see both returning next year.

Most people tend to think Lynch’s Beast Mode has an expiration date and he will switch to Least Mode very soon.

Market for Maxwell is set, but will Hawks want to pay $5 million a year?

Hawks vs Packers Maxwell When Byron Maxwell finally made the Packers pay by picking off a pass from Aaron Rodgers in the opener Thursday, the immediate thought was: If teams keep throwing at him like that, he will end up in the Pro Bowl alongside Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.

Teammate Michael Bennett added another thought, quipping to reporters, “All they’re doing is driving Maxwell’s price up.”

And now we have an idea of the price after Pittsburgh gave cornerback Cortez Allen a five-year deal worth $26 million this weekend.

Wright & Avril likely want more than Hawks prefer to pay

The week leading up to the start of the NFL season is always prime time for contract extensions, and this year certainly has seen its share.

Quarterback Alex Smith (Kansas City), linebacker Vontaze Burfict (Cincinnati) and defensive linemen J.J. Watt (Houston), Jurrell Casey (Tennessee) and Junior Galette (New Orleans) have all secured big contract extensions in the past week or so. Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton received a huge deal a month ago. And wide receivers Dez Bryant (Dallas) and Michael Crabtree (San Francisco) are reportedly in talks as well.

It’s no surprise that the Seahawks also appear to be in on the action, reportedly exploring extensions for defensive end Cliff Avril and linebacker K.J. Wright.
