Thibodeaux ‘a serious trade target’?

With the draft now less than two weeks away, it is pretty clear the Seahawks are trying to figure out how to add a pass rusher who can get the “quick wins” Mike Macdonald wants.

They have brought in several guys for VMAC visits – led by speed rushers Cashius Howell and Malachi Lawrence.

But they also have been looking at all of the top cornerbacks who will be available in their draft zone. They might choose to take one of those first.

That brings us back to veteran pass rushers. We previously brought up the possibility of trading for either Minnesota’s Jonathan Greenard or the Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux.

The latest scuttlebutt is that the Seahawks have indeed called the Giants. Per an alleged Seahawks source to Dan Viens: Thibodeaux is “a serious trade target.”

Via this source (whom Dan thinks is “legit”): The Hawks have reached out to the Giants and also have checked in with Cleveland about NFL sack king Myles Garrett.

It’s quite believable that Seattle has checked in with Cleveland and New York. Schneider and his guys typically explore every opportunity – if only briefly. They reportedly talked to Las Vegas about Maxx Crosby twice last year – in March and again at the deadline.

The Seahawks apparently were very aggressive in trying to make deals last fall. In the end, they landed Rashid Shaheed in a surprise move. But, as Jay Glazer reported back then, “The Seattle Seahawks are very aggressive right now, for several different positions.”

Also at the deadline, Jordan Schultz indicated the Seahawks could make a “holy crap” trade.

So what if that “holy crap” move comes during draft week, for an ace pass rusher?

We have lobbied for Greenard, but we also brought up the idea of Thibodeaux. He would be the cheapest bet on a potential impact edge rusher.

The Giants reportedly would be “compelled” to move him if they were offered a 2 or 3, but we think they might even settle for something like a pick swap – e.g., Seattle’s 2 for New York’s 4, which would be the equivalent of pick 82 (a third-rounder).

Garrett is fan fancy

A lot of fans obviously are stoked at the idea of getting Garrett, but what are the odds really? Not very good, frankly.

The price would be higher than what Micah Parsons and Crosby (in the nixed trade) commanded – so more than two 1s.

Of course, Garrett has some control over any possible move due to his no-trade clause. What if he forced his hand the way Russell Wilson did with the Seahawks – and Seattle were one of the two or three places Garrett would agree to go?

That’s the only shot the Hawks might have – but Schneider still would need to be OK giving up his 2026 and 2027 first-rounders and something else. Maybe Derick Hall or Uchenna Nwosu.

If the Hawks could beat the massive odds and land Garrett, they would owe him a $29.2 million option bonus a week before the season starts. His cap hit in 2026 would be a mere $9 million.

There’s a $39.4 million option bonus a week before the 2027 season. The 2027 cap hit would be about $17 million.

There’s a $21.4 million option bonus a week before the 2028 season. The cap hit that year would be a little over $21 million.

The contract goes through 2030, but the Hawks might be satisfied with just three years and $100 million. That would take Garrett through age 33, and he likely would be able to sustain his All-Pro play for most of that time.

But, like we said, it’s a 99% chance that is all just fan fun. The Seahawks are not going to get Garrett.

Now Thibodeaux, on the other hand — that’s one we previously thought was worth watching, and Dan’s source adds fuel to that fire.

Here’s a mock draft that includes a 2/4 swap for ‘Deaux.
