It will be Rams-Seahawks Part III for the Super Bowl — and it might end up like 49ers-Hawks Part III.
In Rams-Hawks Part I, Sam Darnold threw four picks and the Hawks lost by two points. In Part II, the defense got shredded and the Hawks had to rally from 16 down to win 38-37 in overtime. That’s a terrible performance on each side of the ball to make these tight games.
It will not be a surprise if Part III is not close – not 41-6, but maybe something like 34-17. Seattle’s offense and defense are not going to give the Rams anything, not like they did in the first two games. The Rams, who struggled to beat Carolina and Chicago, should see the best version of the Hawks, just as the 49ers did. If they do, the Rams might not have a chance.
The Seahawks played their most complete game of the season in the 41-6 win over the 49ers, getting an opening kickoff return for a touchdown from Rashid Shaheed, three takeaways, 175 rushing yards and three Ken Walker touchdowns.
“(If) we come out and play the style of ball we’re capable of, execute like we are, we can do this often,” said Ernest Jones IV, who forced a fumble and intercepted a pass.
The Hawks have found the offensive balance they were aiming for all season. They have run for 160 yards or more in four straight games. The offensive line and tight ends played possibly their best game of the season vs. the 49ers (Walker had 116 yards).
As AJ Barner said, “That run game travels. Late in the year, it’s extremely important, so we’re going to keep doing it.”
After the defense gave up a franchise-record 581 yards to Matthew Stafford and company in that wild Thursday night game last month, Mike Macdonald revealed that he overcoached his defense on the short week.
Take away that game and the Hawks have given up 7.3 points per game in the six other games back to Week 13. They had no takeaways in that Rams game, but they have 15 in the six other games back to Week 13.
The Rams game was a total anomaly, and Macdonald explained why afterward.
“I think we felt momentum on some of the things we were doing schematically over the last month and felt we could take a couple easy next steps – the next iteration of what we’ve built. And felt like it wasn’t that taxing on the guys.”
But it was a bad time to expand the playbook – a short week when they took no full-speed practice reps and then had to play in front of their own raucous crowd that made it hard to communicate.
“There are some things where we asked too much of the guys,” Macdonald said. “We’re definitely going to learn from that.”
Expect the Rams to be held in check by the Hawks this time, as they largely were in the 21-19 defeat in Week 11. In that game, the Rams were held to 249 yards and 2 of 11 third downs. The Hawks dominated everywhere but in turnovers – Darnold’s four picks were why they lost that one.
In the 38-37 classic on Dec. 18, Darnold threw just two picks while throwing two TD passes and two PATs (including the do-or-die overtime winner to Eric Saubert). The Hawks also ran for 171 yards and two TDs. It was a balanced attack. Darnold has not thrown any picks the past two games and has just four in his last eight games (two of those against the Rams). Even if he throws two more vs. the Rams, the Hawks very likely will win anyway.
Also, the Hawks’ special teams are on fire. Shaheed kickstarted that comeback against the Rams with a 58-yard punt return for a TD, and he opened the playoff win over the 49ers with a 95-yard kick return (which, as it turned out, was all the points the Hawks really needed to win that game).
The Rams have squeaked out three-point wins in both their road playoff games – at Carolina 34-31 and at Chicago 20-17 in OT. They have been resilient, for sure, to get this far. But they do not look quite good enough to beat a Seattle team that has become even stronger since that Thursday night classic.
Sean McVay knows the Rams have their work cut out this time: “(We’ve) got to be at our best. You watched that game last night. They’re firing on all cylinders.”
The Seahawks are coming off a 35-point blowout win that featured their most complete game of the season. Macdonald has them locked in on getting to and winning the Super Bowl – stacking plays and wins one at a time.
The season series with the Rams is as tight as it can get – separated by a single point and tied in yards in their two matchups — and that will make most people think this one will be close again. But it will not be a surprise to us if the NFC title game looks a little more like the lopsided contest the Hawks just played against the 49ers.
Rams coach got that thought correct, Hawks are firing on all cylinders !! Translation, “We don’t have a chance against the “Darkside” and the 12s.”
