As expected, Hawks decline option on Irvin

As we expected, the Seahawks did not pick up the $7.75 million option on Bruce Irvin — at least according to his Twitter rant Sunday night.

He obviously was disappointed the Hawks did not exercise the option. But he seems determined to earn an extension from the Hawks. The question, of course, is whether he will take their offer before he becomes a free agent or wait and see what the market offers next March.

Some people think the Hawks are trying to motivate him for the 2015 season, but their decision is more a matter of cap economics — as we previously explained. And, like James Carpenter, Irvin seems likely to get a better offer from another team.

The Hawks clearly are planning for the contingency of losing Irvin. It’s part of why they drafted pass rusher Frank Clark in the second round.

John Schneider did not deny it. Asked Friday if Clark was Irvin’s replacement, he said only, “Not necessarily, no.” Not a resounding rejection. The Hawks clearly are hedging their bets and keeping their options open.

On Saturday, Pete Carroll said, “We expect him to be here for a long time and we will work to get that done.” But the Hawks also know it won’t be the worst thing to let Irvin walk and potentially pull a third-round comp pick for him in 2017.

In the meantime, they can only hope he lives up to his tweets, keeps his head on straight and plays his best next season while earning a contract from some team.
