When the Khosla family takes over the Seahawks ahead of this season, the new owners figure to step into a flurry of big contract extensions.
Devon Witherspoon is expected to be the next one, coming in as one of the two highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL before the season begins (ideally even before the Khoslas take ownership). John Schneider also might be working on another big-money extension – for Leonard Williams. And next year it will be Sam Darnold’s turn.
ESPN’s ongoing series of positional top-10 rankings might be informative for the value of new deals for Williams and Darnold.
Williams is considered the best defensive tackle in the league, according to the survey of NFL evaluators. That certainly matches the quality of play we have seen the past two years. As one NFL coordinator told ESPN, “He was the most important player on that Super Bowl team. He’s the total package.”
There has been no reliable word about whether contract talks are ongoing, but it would be great to see Williams extended before this season begins. What would that cost?
Jeffery Simmons just signed a new deal with Tennessee that averages a league-high $35.3 million a year. Simmons is right behind Williams on the ESPN list. Chris Jones of Kansas City ranks second at $31.75 million and is fourth in the DT survey.
Williams, 32, is entering the final year of a deal that has averaged $21.5 million. He has a cap hit of almost $30 million this year, including a salary of $15.8 million. The cap hit is second on the team, behind Darnold’s $37.9 million.
We had been talking about a two-year extension at $25 million a year. But the league’s high esteem for him could push the price. Would the Seahawks go to $30 million? Would they need to? Figure Williams wants to end his career in Seattle and might take a little Derick Hall discount to do so. So somewhere between $25 million and $30 million seems like the right number for him, on a two- or three-year deal.
Meanwhile, Darnold tied for 10th best QB in voting by NFL evaluators – alongside Caleb Williams, Jordan Love and Jayden Daniels. (Williams got the official nod at 10, and the others were honorable mention.)
The 10 top-paid QBs make over $52 million a year (Love is at $55 million), so this is further confirmation that Darnold’s market for his extension next year should be around $55 million. It’s an easy call for Schneider to make – Darnold, who just turned 29, should be the franchise QB into the 2030s.
Once Darnold is extended next year, the offense would have seven starters locked in through at least 2028. An extension for AJ Barner (as we expect) would make it eight.
In a perfect world, Witherspoon and Williams both will have new deals entering 2026 – moves that would keep the core of this stellar defense intact through at least 2028 as well.
The Khoslas are walking into a perfect window for a Super Bowl dynasty. Paying Spoon, Williams and Darnold can help make it happen.
The Patriots chipped an already double-teamed Williams a few times in the Super Bowl. They were terrified of him.
