If and when the Seahawks decide to stop beating themselves, they are going to be hard to beat.
The question is whether they will indeed be able to stop giving games away to their opponents.
They should have beaten the Rams about 30-13 on Sunday, but instead they lost in overtime. Some great performances by the defense, Jaxon Njigba-Smith and Cody White went to waste because of the Three Stooges Act by Geno Smith, Connor Williams and Mike Jerrell.
In order, here are all of the points and scoring chances that mistakes cost the Hawks.
First drive: The Hawks stalled at the Rams’ 40-yard line and chose to punt rather than have Jason Myers try a 58-yard kick.
Second drive: Smith dropped the snap for a 3-yard loss. Then, after hitting Smith-Njigba for 22 yards, Smith threw slightly behind JSN, and the ball bounced off the receiver’s hands and into the clutches of the Rams’ Jaylen McCullough.
Fifth drive: Williams pitched a ball over Smith’s head, leading to a 23-yard loss and a third-and-33. They ended up punting on fourth-and-35 from their 5. (Michael Dickson boomed it 62 yards.) Williams had some other shaky snaps and also gave up a sack. He is playing very poorly and it might be time for Olu Oluwatimi to get a try at center.
The Hawks stunningly snapped out of that funk with two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the half, taking a 13-3 lead.
Sixth drive: After the Rams drove 75 yards for a TD to start the second half, the Hawks went backward. Anthony Bradford was called for a false start, then Smith was sacked. On third-and-16, Smith found JSN for a 40-yard pass to the L.A. 36, but Jerrell was called for holding. On third-and-26, the Hawks surrendered with a handoff and punted. That was another possible three points (at least) burned by a penalty.
Seventh drive: After the Rams tied it at 13-13 with a field goal, the Hawks got in position to score themselves when Smith hit Tyler Lockett for a 20-yard gain and the Rams were called for pass interference when Ahkello Witherspoon tangled feet with White. A pass to White got the Hawks down to the 6-yard line, and then Smith made a bonehead throw that was picked off and run back 103 yards for a touchdown by Kamren Kinchens. That was a 14-point swing.
Instead of leading 23-13, the Hawks trailed 20-13.
Eighth drive: White blocked a punt by the Rams, setting up the Hawks at the L.A. 19. They moved it down to the 4-yard line, where Smith’s pass was picked again by Kinchens. On this one, A.J. Barner was held as Smith tried to dump it to him. But the refs missed that, so the Rams still led 20-13.
If not for all of those errors, the Hawks could have led 30-13.
Ninth drive: Smith hit JSN for a 38-yard gain along the right sideline, but Jerrell held again. A skittish Jerrell then false started, putting the Hawks in a second-and-31 hole.
The defense managed to get the ball back again, and Smith put together a tying 73-yard drive in 1:03. He hit JSN for a 29-yard pass that set up a 14-yard TD connection between the two to tie it.
Tenth drive: Smith hit JSN for 31 yards as the Hawks drove to the Rams’ 16-yard line. But Ken Walker was stopped on two tries for a yard, including the fourth-down play where the Hawks had ALL of their blockers out there. Pretty much to a man, they were blown off the ball by two yards. (And all eyes turned to glare at John Schneider, who put together this stellar line.)
Too bad Ryan Grubb was not smart enough to run a bootleg and hit a tight end who had “fallen down” after “whiffing” on his block. That is the kind of self-aware coaching the Hawks need. Know your weakness and coach around it. Grubb is not there yet.
The Seahawks have now lost five of six after a 3-0 start, and it does not get any easier. The 49ers are up next.
The good news is that the defense looked good as Mike Macdonald simplified things and reduced his rotation. And Grubb finally figured out how to use JSN, who gained 180 yards on seven catches but could have had 255 if not for Jerrell’s two holds.
But Smith needs to regain his focus after a rough last month. His completion percentage was 72 in the first five games, even as he was sacked 18 times. But it has fallen to 63%, with six picks offsetting his six TD passes, over the past four games. And he was a huge reason the Hawks lost to the Rams, trumping the loss to the 49ers as his worst game of the season.
It would help if he felt a little more comfortable back there. He was sacked seven times by the Rams, though some of those were his fault for holding the ball too long. Still, Macdonald was very displeased with the line’s performance – who wasn’t?
If Schneider has any wits about him, he will be calling every selling non-contender to try to acquire a good interior lineman by tomorrow’s deadline. Maybe the Jaguars’ Brandon Scherff or the Saints’ Cesar Ruiz to play right guard?
If the Hawks stand pat, they will be stuck with the four duds currently playing alongside Charles Cross. And Smith will have to be perfect every game if they are going to win many more games.
Geno has lost his confidence playing the last few games. It might be time for the Hawks to look at next yrs college QB draft class.

I doubt they will find the answer in the 2025 draft. Weak class.
They need to give Geno time to keep his passing on schedule. He has shown he can play good ball. Gotta flip the switch back …
