10 days in, what are the Seahawks doing and saying?

The first 10 days of Seahawks training camp have been full of a lot of excitement, but also not without their disappointments.

John Schneider received a big extension, Sam Darnold has taken command of the offense, a couple of rookies – Nick Emmanwori and Tory Horton — have really stood out on both sides, and the defense appears to be in midseason form.

The latter is despite the absence of Uchenna Nwosu (PUP) and Ernest Jones IV dealing with the death of his father. The biggest injury loss has been at running back, where Kenny McIntosh suffered an ACL injury.

Some wondered whether Schneider was on the hot seat this year. Back in March, we had said on the HawksZone Rundown Podcast that he was definitely not in danger and that any such debate should be tabled until 2026. Well, you can table it indefinitely now that he has a new deal through 2031.

Jody Allen said, “I am confident that John will continue to deliver real results and a continued strong partnership with head coach Mike Macdonald that is already contributing to our winning culture on and off the field.”

In the wake of that extension, many fans are hoping Schneider will try to make a big move for Dallas star pass rusher Micah Parsons, who has asked for a trade and also once mentioned possibly reuniting with D-line coach Aden Durde (his coach for his first three years in Dallas) in Seattle. Jerry Jones said he has no intention of trading Parsons though, so Seattle fans should find something else to dream about. Schneider is more likely to make a deal like the one he did for Roy Robertson-Harris last summer.

As the Hawks wind up to their first preseason game Thursday against Pete Carroll’s Raiders, let’s look at what has happened and what the Seahawks themselves are saying after 10 days of camp.

Quarterback

The news: Darnold is winning at least as much as he is losing against Seattle’s stout defense, which gives him and the offense a great bar in preparation for the season. Drew Lock, back after a year with the Giants, reportedly looks better than he did in his first stint in Seattle. Jalen Milroe is a couple of steps behind the vets but apparently learning fast.

Macdonald said: “I think they’ve taken a significant jump from the spring. Sam — he’s playing really decisive, confident, accurate. I think the command of what we’re trying to achieve is on its way. I think Sam would probably echo that sentiment. Drew had a great spring, and I think he’s having a really good camp so far.

“And really happy with (Jalen’s) progress. He’s right where he needs to be right now. Just keep on plugging away, keep competing, keep finding those incremental gains that you can see from day to day. And eventually we’ll look back and we’ll say, man, look how much you’ve grown.”

Running back

The news: Outside the Nwosu news, the worst development was the loss of McIntosh to an ACL. That pretty much ends any competition at this position, with rookie Damien Martinez winning the third spot by default. It also should end any speculation that Kenneth Walker III might end up on the trade block. He keeps getting nicked up (ankle, foot, etc.) and seems sure to miss more time in 2025. Zach Charbonnet figures to be a huge presence on offense again, which is good.

Macdonald on RB depth: “It’s hard to say you’re deep at any position at any given point, because you know how fast these things can happen. But Damien had a good today. George (Holani) has been doing a great job. So we’re excited about those guys.”

Wide receiver

The news: Horton is getting raves for his catches in practice, and he has been practicing with starters Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp ahead of Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Horton was rated a late 3 or early 4 value but lasted until the fifth round due to a knee injury. Durability will be worth watching, but it sure seems like he has a good chance to be a very rare Day 3 receiver success for Schneider.

Macdonald on Horton: “A wise man, (former Carolina star) Steve Smith Sr., once said rookies need to make a play a day to kind of make a name for themselves — and he’s doing that. He’s making multiple plays every day. It’s great. There’s great competition in the receiver room. We are two weeks in, but let’s keep it rolling.’’

Darnold on Horton: “He’s shown a lot of great things so far in training camp. … He’s very hungry to learn the game, learn the system. He just wants to put his best foot forward for the team, and that’s all you can ask for.”

Emmanwori on Horton: “I think he’s going to be the steal of the draft.”

Tight end

The news: Second-year tight end A.J. Barner and second-round rookie Elijah Arroyo are leading the way after the release of Noah Fant. Arroyo is learning what it takes to succeed in the NFL – he has been schooled by Emmanwori and surely has some big lessons coming against NFL defenses. Barner has already experienced that and is trying to get Arroyo up to speed. It will be interesting to see Arroyo in preseason games.

John Schneider on cutting Fant: “We just felt like … we were at a point where we were just saying to ourselves, ‘Can we use that cash to help our team in a different manner? And are we OK at that position and are we covered there?’ And while we never feel like we’re totally covered, guys did have very strong springs.”

Arroyo said: “In college you can kind of get away with little things. I realize if you want to be great everything has to be perfect. … There’s still a lot of room for improvement, but I’m headed in the right direction.”

Darnold on Barner: “I feel like he can be a special player … and I know he wants to go to great heights in his career. He’s got the right attitude and the right stuff.”

Offensive line

The news: Charles Cross had finger surgery and will be out until the opener, so Josh Jones is the left tackle for the preseason. … Grey Zabel said Leonard Williams and other veteran D-linemen have helped him a lot as he works to be NFL ready by the time the Hawks play the 49ers on Sept. 7. … Center and right guard are still up for grabs. Christian Haynes, who has worked at both spots, has been bothered by a pectoral injury recently. The hope is that Abe Lucas will be a big help to the right guard and Zabel will make the center better. But that will all take time.

Zabel said:Run the damn ball is what … we’re going to hang our hat on this year. It starts up front. We’ve got to move the line of scrimmage and then protect the guy behind us who’s slinging the rock pretty well right now.”

Defensive line

The news: Byron Murphy II is going to play a lot more 3-technique, which seems a much better fit for his skills. That means the Hawks need to find more help at nose tackle. Johnathan Hankins was a desperation re-sign after the Hawks were not able to draft one, and the Hawks have been rotating big tackles on and off the roster. Two guys who could figure in the mix are Brandon Pili  (waiver pickup from Miami) and Quinton Bohanna (practice squad guy in 2024). But Schneider seems very likely to make a move for D-line help, just like he did last year.

Jarran Reed on Murphy: “In my mind, I can see him being Defensive Player of the Year. He’s a great guy. He works hard. He listens. He’s strong as shit, he’s fast and he’s strong as shit. And I don’t think nobody’s going to be able to block him, for real.”

Edge rusher

The news: Nwosu (knee) is on PUP, and it does not sound like he is expected to be ready for the season – which means he could miss the first four games. That has a lot of fans dreaming of Seattle trading for Parsons – which seems very unlikely. … Meanwhile, former Cowboy DeMarcus Lawrence has been coaching up Derick Hall, Boye Mafe and the other edge players.

Macdonald on Lawrence: “He’s like the best drill player I’ve ever seen in my life. You could ask him to do any drill known to mankind, and just the trust he has in why you’re doing it, he’s 1,000 percent every rep. … And that’s the standard that he’s setting for our front, so the guys don’t have a choice but to fall in line. It’s just exciting to see him out there working. You know what he can do on the field — the tape speaks for itself — but you understand how it comes to life based on how he works.”

Reed on Lawrence and Hall: “They’re crazy as hell. They play one way, and that’s balls to the wall — and that’s all you could ask for. That’s the standard we’re trying to set with this defense: fast and physical as shit.”

Linebacker

The news: Jones has had to deal with the loss of his dad during this camp.

Macdonald on Jones: “He’s a beast. The guy is an alpha. He’s probably our top leader on defense. But it’s a tough time. It’s really hard, and his family needs him — they’re really far away. That’s a tough balance right now, so it’s going to be a process over the next however long.”

Safety

The news: Emmanwori has been a standout, picking off a pass almost every day since the team put on pads — even as Macdonald has his coaches bring the rookie along slowly and not overburden him with too many duties. … A.J. Finley suffered a serious knee injury Saturday. D’Anthony Bell reportedly has had a great camp so far and seems the favorite to join Emmanwori as the backup safeties (Bell is known for his special-teams play).

Macdonald on Emmanwori: “You have to be careful that you don’t take the playmaker out of the player, so that’s something that’s kind of on my mind (with not overloading the rookie). But he just keeps learning and keeps executing and keeps making plays.’’

  1. Fifty+ years of being a sports fan have made me wary of training camp optimism. Still, I like what I’ve heard about Horton. A solid rookie year from him could shore up what is a suspect WR room. Doug Baldwin and Darrell Jackson both had 50 catches as rookies, so who knows?

  2. Here are the rookie seasons of the last three Day 2 TE classes:

    2024
    Ben Sinnott (#53) 5 rec / 28 yards / 1 TD
    Tip Reiman (#82) 6 / 37 / 1

    2023
    Sam LaPorta (#34) 86 / 889 / 10
    Michael Mayer (#35) 27 / 304 / 2
    Luke Musgrave (#42) 34 / 352 / 1
    Luke Schoonmaker (#58) 8 / 65 / 2
    Brenton Strange (#61) 5 / 35 / 1
    Tucker Kraft (#78) 31 / 355 / 2
    Darnell Washington (#93) 7 / 61 / 0
Cameron Latu (#101) Has not gotten in a game. Currently on third team.

    2022
    Trey McBride (#55) 29 / 265 / 1
Jelani Woods (#73) Specials teams; has not played since 2022. Currently on third team.
    Greg Dulcich (#80) 33 / 411 / 2
    Jeremy Rucker (#101) 1 / 8 / 0

As much as we’d like to see Arroyo be another Sam LaPorta, only LaPorta and McBride have had notable success after their rookie seasons. Some of these guys—Mayer and Schoonmaker, e.g.—were highly regarded, too. While Arroyo may yet be good, I’m not holding my breath for much out of his rookie season.

    1. On the other hand, maybe coach and GM are finally on the same wavelength re how to use a TE, meaning that MM won’t try to force a pass catcher to play like Zach Miller. That would be a start.
