Free agency Day 1: Hawks get a good deal on Darnold

As expected, the Seahawks quickly agreed to a deal with Sam Darnold.

It was reported as $100.5 million over three years, with $37.5 million in Year 1 and $55 million total guaranteed. So essentially that is a two-year deal worth $55 million — $27.5 million a year. And then they will revisit in 2027.

If he continues to ascend his play under Klint Kubiak, he will merit a new deal. Otherwise, the Hawks set it up as a two-year trial — with many thinking (hoping) they will draft a QB this year or next.

Swapping Geno Smith for Darnold seems like a pretty even talent exchange (though many clearly would disagree to either direction, arguing Smith is much better or worse).

It helps that Darnold knows the offensive system from his 2023 season spent in San Francisco with Kubiak, under Kyle Shanahan.

The Hawks now need to turn their attention to other parts of their offense: interior line and receiver.

On Monday night, they added backup tackle/guard Josh Jones from Baltimore, reportedly for one year and up to $4.75 million.

They obviously still need a starting left guard, and the Colts’ Will Fries and Chicago’s Teven Jenkins were both still available as of this update.

As expected, they lost out on the top free-agent center, Drew Dalman. He signed a deal worth $14 million a year with the Bears. They also did not get Ryan Kelly, who left the Colts for the Vikings on a deal worth $18 million over two years. Josh Myers was the top remaining center as of this update.
